SCH3U - OSSD 11 Chemistry Course

Course Outline 2024/25

Overview

This course is designed to meet the educational needs of all learners of SCH3U OSSD 11 Chemistry. The content will
be assessed through a variety of means including in class observations and conversations, lab work, assignments
and timed assessments (in-class quizzes, tests, exam) will be written in line with established course assessment
and with OSSD style questions.

The course is designed to allow students to achieve the following aims:


1. develop conceptual understanding that allows connections to be made between different areas of the
subject, and to other science subjects
2. acquire and apply a body of knowledge, methods, tools and techniques that characterize science
3. develop the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesize scientific information and claims
4. develop the ability to approach unfamiliar situations with creativity and resilience
5. design and model solutions to local and global problems in a scientific context
6. develop an appreciation of the possibilities and limitations of science
7. develop technology skills in a scientific context
8. develop the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively
9. develop awareness of the ethical, environmental, economic, cultural and social impact of science.

Successful completion of this course will earn one Ontario curriculum credit: SCH3U (Grade 11 Chemistry).

KINETICS:
1. Measuring Enthalpy Changes (Reactivity 1.1)
2. Formal Lab

KINETICS: CONTONUED
3. Energy Cycles in Reactions (Reactivity 1.2)

STOICHIOMETRY (MOLES):
4. Counting Particles by mass: The Mole (Structure 1.4)
5. Ideal Gases (Structure 1.5)

You will have an account for the online textbook through Kognity. Students will be assigned readings here, but are
highly encouraged to use this as a main support to class notes and for additional practice questions. Some sections
of Kognity are not specific to OSSD to using the class notes (and related topic codes) will support students in
making the best use of this online text book.
