Tenses – Structure and Uses (Class 9 English Grammar)

1. Present Tense
Tense Type Structure Example Use
Simple Present Subject + V1 (s/es) She plays cricket. Regular actions,
facts, habits
Present Subject + is/am/are I am reading a book. Action happening
Continuous + V1 + ing now
Present Perfect Subject + has/have They have eaten Completed action

2. Past Tense

Tips for Students


- V1 = base form (go, eat, write)

- V2 = past form (went, ate, wrote)

- V3 = past participle (gone, eaten, written)


- Practice daily to improve sentence formation.

- Look for time words:

• Now → Present Continuous


• Yesterday → Simple Past
• Since/For → Perfect/Perfect Continuous
