When to Involve Children in Sports Transcript
Narrator: About 27 million children in the United States take part in sports
programs.
Most people agree that sports are good for kids, but many parents are
not sure how early their kids should start playing sports and how hard
they should push1 them to play.
Sports are a terrific2 way for children to learn to get along with others
and to develop self-confidence3. But experts say that if children start to
play sports too early, they could experience some problems. They may
not enjoy the sport and, as a result, they may never learn to enjoy sports.
Parents need to be sure the child is physically4 ready and has the
strength and balance necessary to play the sport. The child also needs to
be emotionally5 ready. Parents should consider how independent the
child is, and how well he or she plays with other children.
The key to success is making sports enjoyable, especially for younger
children. Focus on fun, not on winning.
