Act 1 ( A Million Dreams )
Barnum and Charity playing around.
I close my eyes and I can see
A world that's waiting up for me
That I call my own
Through the dark, through the door
Through where no one's been before
But it feels like home
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy
They can say, they can say I've lost my mind
I don't care, I don't care, so call me crazy
We can live in a world that we design
'Cause every night I lie in bed
The brightest colours fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
Oh, a million dreams for the world we're gonna make
There's a house we can build
Every room inside is filled
With things from far away
The special things I compile
Each one there to make you smile
On a rainy day
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy
They can say, they can say we've lost our minds
I don't care, I don't care if they call us crazy
Runaway to a world that we design
Every night I lie in bed
The brightest colours fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
Oh, a million dreams for the world we're gonna make

However big, however small

Let me be part of it all
Share your dreams with me
You may be right, you may be wrong
But say that you'll bring me along
To the world you see
To the world I close my eyes to see
I close my eyes to see
Every night I lie in bed
The brightest colours fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
A million dreams, a million dreams
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make
For the world we're gonna make

Act 2 ( Office Scene )

Barnum looks at the audience
Barnum: If I may sir, I believe I have the skills and some ideas... that go well beyond counting
numbers into an adding machine.
Barnum: I have read about this German fellow, Lilienthal... I believe he's developed a glider
that could take a man in the air, sir. Isn't that amazing?
Barnum: I mean, if you were to apply that to this business, it would be revolutionary.
The boss speaks nonchalantly in all of their lines
Boss: Gentlemen. Can I have your attention? You are all dismissed.
Barnum: Bankrupt? I thought the company had a dozen trading ships.
Boss: Yes, at the bottom of the South China Seas.
Boss: A typhoon sank them all. (sarcastically said)

Act 3 ( Bank Scene )

Bank Manager: Mr. Barnum.
-inside office-
Bank Manager: This venture you propose is risky and somewhat bizarre.
Barnum: It's a good bet, it's what it is. Sir, people don't wanna admit it... but they are
fascinated with the exotic and the macabre it’s why we stare at it.
Bank Manager: The bank is going to need substantial collateral.
Barnum: Of course. I would not suggest otherwise. (said enthusiastically)
Barnum: The deed and title to my entire fleet of trading vessels.
(they shake hands)
Act 4 ( Inside the Museum )

Barnum: Look. Marie Antoinette with the sore throat. Napoleon. Come here. You see?
You have already met some of the most famous folks from the history.
Barnum: But they are not all wax.
Barnum: This is the Great O'Malley. Master of sleight of hand, the king of deception.
Caroline: You don't look like a magician.
Mr. O’Malley: I am a thief.
Barnum: A very good thief.
Barnum: I caught him taking my watch.
Barnum: You see?
Helen: An elephant!
Barnum: Not just any elephant.
Mr. O’Malley: I can get you something real nice, just say the word.

change your life!
Barnum: We have a shows on the hour, every hour!
Caroline: I love your dress.
Barnum: Surely not for the fainted heart.
Barnum: I can tell you that you'll love it.
Barnum: Half the price for anyone who is wearing a hat. Ho ho, that's you, sir!
Barnum: Welcome to the Barnum Museum.
Random Citizen: Garbage. (then snickers)
The citizen throws the flyer on the street
Barnum goes to Mr. O’Malley and asks about the tickets
Mr. O’Malley: Welcome to the Barnum Museum, where’s everyone...
Barnum: How many tickets?
Mr. O’Malley: Three.
Barnum: Three?!
Charity and the girls show up with three tickets in their hands

Act 6 ( Finding Charles )

(Sees Charles in the street hiding)
Barnum: Hey, what's your name?
Charles: Charles.
Barnum: P. T Barnum. At your service. I'm putting together a show...and I need a star.
Charles: You want people to laugh at me?
Barnum: Well, they are laughing anyway, kid. So, might as well get paid.
I see a soldier.
No, a general...riding across the stage with a sword and gun and.. the most beautiful uniform
ever made.
People will come from all over the world and when they see him they won't laugh.
They will salute.

Act 7 ( Posters )

His daughters look at him
They continue to post posters around

Barnum: Really?
Barnum goes to the location the drunkard gave with his daughters
Barnum: Come on, girls.

Act 8 ( Recruitment Scene )

Barnum: Hello.
Workers: Sir, you can't be here.
Barnum: I'm sorry. Who is doing that singing?
Barnum sees Lettie Lutz
Barnum: It's you, isn't it?
Barnum walks towards Lettie Lutz
Worker: Sir, I'll have to ask you to leave.
Barnum: You are so talented, blessed... Extraordinary.
Barnum: Unique. I would even say 'beautiful'.
Workers laugh
Lettie Lutz: Sir, please leave me alone.
Helen approaches Lettie Lutz and gives her a flyer
Barnum: They don't understand it, but they will.

Act 9 ( Audition Scene )

Barnum: Okay. Anne and WD Wheeler.
Barnum: Brother and sister?
Anne and WD Wheeler: Yes sir.
Barnum: Terrific. And what do you do?
Anne Wheeler: Trapeze.

Barnum: Now, yes!
Shows a poster of Hairy Guy
Barnum: Can I just ask how heavy you are? Do you have a number for that?
Lord of Leeds: I prefer not to say it, but...
Barnum: Just between you and me.
Lord of Leeds: 250..
Barnum: what?? 750 you say?
Lord of Leeds: 750 it is!
They shake hands and they show a poster of the heaviest man alive

Act 10 ( Post-show, outside of the museum )

Barnum: Ah Mr. Bennett from the Herald! Come to take in another show, huh?

Bennett: Mr. Barnum, has it bothered you that everything you’re selling is fake?
Barnum: Do these smiles look fake?
Bennett: So you are a philanthropist?

Barnum: Well, hyperbole isn't the worst crime. Men suffer more from imagining too little
than too much.

Act 11 ( Bar Scene )

*Barnum and Philip Carlyle drinking*
Barnum: I want to go after the carriage straight.
Barnum: Present legitimate acts, expand our appeal... go after the snobs.
Barnum: So come join our circus. You clearly have a flair for show business.
*Barnum and Philip Carlyle continues to take shots*
Barnum: Teach me how to appeal to the highbrows.
Philip Carlyle: Are you serious? Mr. Barnum, I can not just run off and join a circus.
Barnum: Why not? Sounds thrilling isn't it?
Philip Carlyle: Lets just say that I find it much more comfortable... admiring your show from
afar.
Barnum: Comfort, the enemy of progress.
Philip Carlyle: Do you understand that just associating with you could cost me my
inheritance.
Barnum: I thought it'd cost you more than that. You would be risking everything.
Barnum: you just might find yourself a free man.

Philip Carlyle: Well, it's intriguing, but to go would cost me greatly

So what percentage of the show would I be taking?
Barnum: Fair enough, you'd want a piece of all the action
I'd give you seven, we could shake and make it happen

Philip Carlyle: I wasn't born this morning, eighteen would be just fine
Barnum: Why not just go ahead and ask for nickels on the dime?

Philip Carlyle: Fifteen

Barnum: I'd do eight

Philip Carlyle: Twelve

Barnum: Maybe nine

Philip Carlyle: Ten

*They face eachother, Philip Carlyle pays for their drinks before shaking hands*
Philip Carlyle: Sir, it looks like you have yourself a junior partner.
Barnum: What I have is an overcompensated apprentice.

Anne: And what is your act, Mr. Carlyle?
Carlyle: I don't have an act.
Anne: Everyone has got an act. she smiles and walks away
O'Malley: Mr. Barnum.
Barnum: Yeah?
O'Malley: You better come see this.
*shows a protest sign of “GO HOME FREAKS”*
O’Malley: A bit of a nasty element.
Barnum: There always is, is there.
-transition to next day-
Barnum: “The Barnum Circus sparks Protests as a purveyor of the offensive and indecent.”
Lettie: Offensive and Indecent” Mr. Bennett, I am blushing.
Barnum: Do you have any thoughts on this?
Carlyle: As a matter of fact, I do.
*Reads the following*
"The master of the Household, has it in the command of the Queen...
To invite Mr. Phineas Barnum and his theatrical troop to a reception at Buckingham Palace."
Charity: The Queen Victoria? Is this real?
Carlyle: I had to pull a few strings. If you want society to accept you, you may as well start at
the very, very top.
Anne: Are we all invited?
Carlyle: I guess I’ll have to tell the Queen that either all of us go or none of us will.
The Freaks and Barnum celebrate
Charles: The Queen of England. Can't get much better than that.
Barnum: he whispers to Charity
Charity, come here I have a surprise for you and the kids.
*Barnum blindfolds Charity and walks to the mansion along with their kids*

Act 13 ( Mansion Scene )

Barnum guiding his wife who has her eyes covered
Barnum: This way.
Charity: Don't you think there is enough 'blind trust' in my life?
Barnum: Well, isn't that what makes it fun?
Barnum: Keep coming. Okay. Are you ready?

Charity: Is it?
Barnum: It is.
Barnum: Come on. Let’s go.
Barnum: Push.
Barnum walks inside the mansion with Charity and their daughters

Barnum gives his gifts

Barnum: Helen, that's for you. And, Caroline, this is for you.
The girls excitedly opens their gifts
Charity: Don't tell me you bought this house just to rub it in my parents face about your
success.
Barnum: That wasn’t the only reason. This is the life I promised you.
Barnum and Charity embrace each other
Barnum: Shall we?
Barnum and Charity dances romantically
Barnum: Welcome home, Charity Barnum.
Charity: aren’t you fixing your stuff for England, Phineas?

T Barnum and his...Oddities from America.
Carlyle: Your Majesty, may I present Mr. Barnum.
Barnum: The honor is mine, Mr. Barnum.
Queen Victoria: And I've heard all about your little colonel from my friends in America.
Charles: General, ma'am.
Queen Victoria: You are even smaller than I imagined.
Charles: Well, you are not exactly reaching the top self yourself sweetheart.
(Everyone is shocked for a few seconds then the Queen starts laughing her head off then
everyone around her laughs it off).
Guard: Your Majesty! Miss Jenny Lind.
*Jenny Lind walks down the aisle and bows before the queen*
Barnum: *looks at her* Who’s that?
Carlyle: This is Miss Jenny Lind. She is the most famous
performer in all of Europe. She has sold out La Scala a dozen times. Not to mention the
French Opera.
*Barnum pushes Philip to Lind*
Carlyle: What are you doing?
Barnum: Following you so you can introduce me to Miss Lind.
*Lind looks at Carlyle and Barnum*
Carlyle: My name is Phillip Carlyle. *Carlyle kisses her hand* And this extraordinary
gentleman next to me...
Barnum: Phineas Taylor Barnum, The pleasure is mine. *Barnum kisses her hand*
Jenny: Of course, you are the American. I believe I might have heard of you.
Barnum: Oh well, If you've heard of me all the way over here, I must have been doing
something right.
Jenny: That, or something very wrong.
Barnum: A showman, Miss Lind, just a showman.
The best on my side of the Atlantic.
Jenny: If you just say so yourself.
Barnum: I do, but I don't have to. Miss Lind, let me get to the point.
I would like to bring you to New York. And if you agree...I will make you the most famous
singer not in Europe but in the entire world.
Jenny: And have you heard me sing?
Barnum: Absolutely. No, I haven't. But like mine, your reputation precedes you... and well, I
trust your reputation more than my own.
You will be the "Voice of a nightingale, Heart of an Angel."

Act 15 ( Theatre House )

*Jenny Lind takes center stage for her first American performance*
Barnum: Oh, God, I hope she can sing. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience.
I recently had the privilege of hearing the most divine voice...Now, I know that sounds like
Barnum humbug... but I have a hundred bottles of good champagne on ice that says that this
is not just another sideshow novelty.
May I present, the Swedish Nightingale...
Miss Jenny Lind.
*Miss Jenny Lind starts to sing*
I'm trying to hold my breath let it stay that way.
Can't let this moment end.
You set off a dream with me.
Getting louder now.
Can you hear it echoing?
Take my hand.
Will you share this with me?
'Cause darling without you.
All the shine of a thousand spotlights.
All the stars we steal from the night sky will never be enough never be enough.
Towers of gold are still too little.
These hands could hold the world but
it will never be enough
never be enough for me!
never, never, never, never, never for me.
never enough, never enough, never enough, for me, for me for me.
All the shine of a thousand spotlights.
All the stars we steal from the night sky will never be enough never be enough.
Towers of gold are still too little.
These hands could hold the world but
It will never be enough
Never be enough for me
Never never never never never for me for me
never enough never, never
never enough for me for me, for me for me.

Charles: Lord, that lady can sing.
Barnum: I know.
Charles: Thinks she likes a man in uniform?
Barnum: I'm sure she does. What are you doing here? You got a show in an hour, OK?
Lettie: That's enough time for us to have at least three drinks, right? Come on.
Barnum: No no. Lettie.
Lettie: What?
Barnum: It's very crowded in here, okay? And I can't have you mingling. Who's gonna pay
admission if you are out there for all the world to see.
*Barnum ushers them out*
Barnum: Have a great show.
Lettie: Wait...
*Lettie starts to sing*
I am not a stranger to the dark.
"Hide away," they say.
"Cause we don't want your broken parts"
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars.
"Run away," they say
"No one will love you as you are."
But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us.
For we are glorious.
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down.
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out.

We are bursting through the barricades and reaching for the sun, we are warriors.
Yeah, that's what we've become.
Won't let them

Act 17 (Barnum exits the circus for a leave)

Carlyle: Why can’t you put more shows in New York? Why do you need to tour the country?
Do you know how much this tour will cost us? And what about Jenny?
Barnum: Yea, yea, yea. I took out a loan.
Carlyle: And we have to pay Jenny in advance?
Barnum: It was a large loan. Okay?
Carlyle: You’re not gonna see a penny of profit.
Barnum: Well, then how about you shoe them a smile? Take over while I’m gone.
Carlyle: What? Take over? Are you insane?
*Barnum exits the scene*
*curtains close*

Act 18 (Ticket Office)

*Anne goes to ticket office*
Anne: Mr. Barnum said he left a ticket for me.

Carlyle: Wasn't sure you'd come if I asked.
Anne: I've always wanted to go to the theater.
*Carlyle’s father saw Phillip and Anne in the distance*
Phillip's Father - Phillip, is that you?
Carlyle: Mother. Father. This is Anne Wheeler.
Phillip's Father: Phillip, have you no shame? To associate yourself with that Barnum business
is one thing...but parading around with that...
Anne: (exits the scene)
Carlyle: Anne.
Carlyle: How dare you speak to her like that?
Phillip's Mother: You forget your place, Phillip.
Carlyle: My place? Mother, if this is my place, then I don't wanna be a part of it.
*Carlyle exits the scene and transitions to the circus*

Act 19 (Rewrite the stars)

Carlyle: They are small minded people.
Anne: Why do you care what they say?
Carlyle: It's not just them.
Anne: Never had somebody look at you the way your parents looked at me. The way
everyone would look at us.
*Carlyle starts to sing*
[PHILLIP CARLYLE]
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
I know you want me
So don't keep sayin' our hands are tied
You claim it's not in the cards
And fate is pulling you miles away and out of reach from me
But you're here in my heart
So who can stop me if I decide that you're my destiny?

[ANNE WHEELER]
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine?
Nothing could keep us apart
You'd be the one I was meant to find
It's up to you and it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
So why don't we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the world could be ours tonight
[PHILLIP CARLYLE & ANNE WHEELER]
No one can rewrite the stars
How can you say you'll be mine?
Everything keeps us apart
And I'm not the one you were meant to find
It's not up to you, it's not up to me
When everyone tells us what we can be
How can we rewrite the stars?
Say that the world can be ours tonight
All I want is to fly with you
All I want is to fall with you
So just give me all of you

[ANNE WHEELER]
It feels impossible
[PHILLIP CARLYLE]
It's not impossible

[ANNE WHEELER]
Is it impossible?

[PHILLIP CARLYLE & ANNE WHEELER]

Say that it's possible

How do we rewrite the stars?

[PHILLIP CARLYLE & ANNE WHEELER, PHILLIP CARLYLE]

Say you were made to be mine

[PHILLIP CARLYLE & ANNE WHEELER]

Nothing can keep us apart
'Cause you are the one I was meant to find
It's up to you and it's up to me
No one can say what we get to be
Why don't we rewrite the stars?
Changin' the world to be ours

[ANNE WHEELER]
You know I want you
It's not a secret I try to hide
But I can't have you
We're bound to break and my hands are tied.

Bennett: Mind you, I wouldn’t call it art.
Barnum: Of course not.
Bennett: But, putting folks of all kinds on stage with you… all colors, shapes, sizes…
presenting them as equals. Why another critic might have even called it “a celebrations of
humanity”.
Barnum: I would’ve liked that.
Bennett: Well, I’ll hope you’ll rebuild.
Barnum: We’ll use all of the profit from Jenny’s tour to rebuild the circus.

Barnum: Because she orchestrated the photo. I’m not in love with her!
*Charity looks at Barnum*
Charity: Of course you’re not. Not with her, not with me, not with anyone. Just you and your
show.
Barnum: What are you doing?
Charity: I’m going home.
Barnum: This is your home.
Charity: The bank they’re evicting us.
*Charity gives Barnum the document*
Charity: Why didn’t you ask me before… I would’ve said yes. I never minded the risk, but we
always did it together.
*Charity leaves the mansion and exits the scene*

Act 23 ( Bar scene )

*The scene transitions to a Bar*
*Barnum is sitting down reflecting on his actions and Charles enters the scene and stands
on top of Barnum’s table*
Charles: Figured you’d end up here, feeling sorry for yourself.
*As the other freaks enter the scene*
Barnum: Folks if you have come to get paid, the money's gone. All of it.
Anne: You just don't get it. Our own mothers were ashamed of us. Hid us our whole lives.
Lettie: Then you pull us out of the shadows. And now you are giving upon us too. Maybe you
are a fraud.
Charles: But you gave us a real family.
W.D: And the circus... That was our home.
World's Heaviest Man - We want our home back.
*Barnum starts to sing*
From Now On
[Verse 1: Barnum]
I saw the sun begin to dim
And felt that winter wind blow cold
A man learns who is there for him
When the glitter fades and the walls won't hold
'Cause from that rubble, what remains
Can only be what's true
If all was lost, there's more I gained
'Cause it led me back to you

[Chorus: Barnum]
From now on
These eyes will not be blinded by the lights
From now on
What's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight, tonight
Let this promise in me start
Like an anthem in my heart
From now on
From now on
[Verse 2: Barnum]
I drank champagne with kings and queens
The politicians praised my name
But those were someone else's dreams
The pitfalls of the man I became
For years and years, I chased their cheers
A crazy speed of always needin' more
But when I stop and see you here
I remember who all this was for

[Chorus]
And from now on
These eyes will not be blinded by the lights
From now on
What's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight, it starts tonight
And let this promise in me start
Like an anthem in my heart
From now on
From now on
From now on

[Refrain: Ensemble, Barnum]

And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again (From now on)
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again
And we will come back home (From now on)
And we will come back home (From now on)
Home again
And we will come back home (From now on)
And we will come back home (From now on, yes)
Home again
And we will come back home (From now on)
And we will come back home (From now on)
Home again
[Chorus: Barnum, Ensemble]
From now on
These eyes will not be blinded by the lights
From now on
What's waited 'til tomorrow starts tonight, it starts tonight
Let this promise in me start
Like an anthem in my heart
From now on
From now on
From now on

[Refrain: Ensemble]
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again
And we will come back home
And we will come back home
Home again

[Outro: Ensemble]
From now on
From now on
Home again, oh, ooh
From now on
From now on
Home again
Act 24 ( Beach )
*Barnum approaches Charity at the beach*
Barnum: I wanted to be more than I was.
Charity: I never wanted anything but the man I fell in love with.
*Barnum starts to sing*
Barnum: Let this promise in the start. Like an anthem in my heart.
Charity: However big, however small
Barnum: From now on. From now one
*Barnum hugs and kisses Charity*

Act 25 ( What will we do now? )

*Barnum, Carlyle and the Freaks meet at the ruined circus*
Lettie: The bank said no?
Barnum: Emphatically. And repeatedly. I don't think there is a bank left in this country... can
fool into loaning me more money, so...l'm really sorry to disappoint you all.
Charles: Don't worry, Barnum. We've gotten used to it by now.
Carlyle: You know, Barnum...when I first met you...l had an inheritance...and an invitation to
every party in town. And now thanks to you. All that's gone. All that's left is this friendship,
love and work that I adore. You brought joy into my life.
Lettie: Into all our lives.
All : Yeah.
Barnum: I need a bank who takes joy as collateral.
Carlyle: They may not... But I will. I own 10% of the show. Knowing who I was working for...I
had the good sense to take my cut weekly.
Barnum: Phillip, I can't let you gamble it on me...
Carlyle: Sure you can.
WD: Don't turn sensible on us now.
Carlyle: Partners.
Barnum: Partners.
*Carlyle and Barnum shake their hands*
Barnum: We don’t need a building. All we need is a tent.
All: Come on.

Greatest Show
Whoa (x8)

Barnum:
Ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for (whoa)
Been searching in the dark, your sweat soaking through the floor (whoa)
And buried in your bones there's an ache that you can't ignore
Taking your breath, stealing your mind
And all that was real is left behind

Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya

It's only this moment, don't care what comes after
Your fever dream, can't you see it getting closer
Just surrender 'cause you feel the feeling taking over
It's fire, it's freedom, it's flooding open
It's a preacher in the pulpit and your blind devotion
There's something breaking at the brick of every wall it's holding
All that you know, so tell me do you wanna go?

Ensemble and Barnum:

Where it's covered in all the colored lights
Where the runaways are running the night
Impossible comes true, it's taking over you
Oh, this is the greatest show
We light it up, we won't come down
And the sun can't stop us now
Watching it come true, it's taking over you
Oh, this is the greatest show

Barnum:
(Whoa) colossal we come these renegades in the ring
(Whoa) where the lost get found and we crown them the circus kings

Ensemble and Barnum:

Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya
It's only this moment, don't care what comes after
It's blinding, outshining anything that you know
Just surrender 'cause you're calling and you wanna go

Where it's covered in all the colored lights

Where the runaways are running the night
Impossible comes true, intoxicating you
Oh, this is the greatest show
We light it up, we won't come down
And the sun can't stop us now
Watching it come true, it's taking over you
Oh, this is the greatest show

Barnum and Lettie:

It's everything you ever want
It's everything you ever need
And it's here right in front of you
This is where you wanna be (this is where you wanna be)
It's everything you ever want
It's everything you ever need
And it's here right in front of you
This is where you wanna be
This is where you wanna be

Ensemble, Carlyle, Lettie, Anne and Barnum:
