Navigating Organizational Change in Healthcare
Healthy Care Hospital's transition to electronic health records (EHRs) is a significant organizational change that
requires careful planning and execution. Lewin's Change Model provides a useful framework for managing this
change.
Unfreeze Phase
In the Unfreeze phase, Healthcare Hospital must recognize the need for change and prepare its staff for the
transition. This involves identifying the problems associated with paper-based record-keeping, such as
inefficiencies and potential errors in patient care (Kurt Lewin, 1947). The hospital should raise awareness about the
benefits of EHRs, including improved patient outcomes and enhanced operational efficiency.
Change Phase
The Change phase involves implementing the EHR system and training staff to use it effectively. This requires
allocating necessary resources, including time and personnel, to support the transition (Kurt Lewin, 1947). The
hospital should also address potential resistance to change by engaging with staff and addressing their concerns.
Refreeze Phase
In the Refreeze phase, Healthcare Hospital needs to stabilize the organization after the change has been
implemented. This involves ensuring that the new practices become ingrained within the company culture and that
staff are comfortable using the EHR system (Kurt Lewin, 1947). The hospital should monitor the effectiveness of
the EHR system and make adjustments as needed.
Conclusion
Lewin's Change Model provides a useful framework for managing organizational change at Healthcare Hospital.
By following the Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze phases, the hospital can effectively transition to an EHR system
and improve patient care.
