READING Task 1: Read the passage and decide whether the following statements are true (T), false (F), or not

Costa Rica is viewed by many experts as a model for ecotourism. For a small country, roughly the size of Vermont and New
Hampshire combined, it has a variety of wildlife, with 1,500 species of trees, 850 types of birds, and 6,000 kinds of flower plants.
The national park system covers nearly 20 percent of the country, and there are several private parks as well. Costa Rica is also
politically stable, adding to its attractiveness.
As in many of the world’s parks and reserves, the entrance fees in Costa Rica are quite low, ranging from a few cents to $2.75.
Many biologists and even tour companies believe higher fees would not only encourage good land management but also limit
crowds. Rwanda, in contrast to tourist-crowded Kenya, charges some of the highest fees in the world: $170 a day to enter the
Parc National des Volcans and view its famous mountain gorillas. The high fees, which take up much of the nation’s income, have
enabled the government to add anti-hunting guards and reduce the number of hunting deaths. The nation gets $1 million in
annual park fees from visitors and up to $9 million in indirect income from tourists, according to the World Resources Institute, a
nonprofit policy research centre.
1. Costa Rica is a good example of ecotourism.
2. Costa Rica has more than 10,000 species of trees, birds, and flower plants.
3. The national park system covers nearly 20 percent of Costa Rica.
4. Costa Rica’s political instability affects its attractiveness to tourists.
5. Entrance fees in Costa Rica’s parks can be as low as a few cents.
6. Kenya is not a popular place for tourists.
7. Rwanda’s high entrance fees have reduced the number of hunting deaths in the park.
8. The high fees in Rwanda help increase the standard of living of local people.
Task 2: Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Tourists in Venice are expected to be on their best behaviour. For years, the northern Italian city has been fighting the negative
aspects of mass tourism – and as a result, strict rules for vacationers are being enforced this summer.
It’s now forbidden to walk around the city naked or to jump into the canals for a swim. Tourists had also better watch where
they take a seat – sitting and lying down is banned on sidewalks and bridges and on the sides of fountains and stairs; violators
will be fined.
The city’s government also aims to limit the number of people entering Venice. In 2019, Venice counted 5.5 million visitors,
which is 100 times the population of the city. The introduction of an entrance fee for travellers not staying the night, which was
announced several years ago by the Venice city authority, has yet to be implemented. It has now been postponed until 2024.
The entry fee will then be tested during 20 days when crowds in the city are particularly heavy. However, the matter is very
complex as the city of Venice will be the first in Italy to implement this measure. The authorities want to be sure that everything
is done properly because there is no model to follow.
Venice, however, is not the only place in Italy that is implementing measures in order to manage crowds of tourists. This
summer in the city of Baunei on Sardinia, access to some of the most sought-after beaches is being strictly regulated. There
are a limited number of places per day on such beaches, which must be booked and paid for in advance.
Italy is experiencing the biggest number of vacationers this summer. According to the market research institute Demoskopika,
the country will set a new tourist record in 2023. The number of visitors is expected to reach 68 million people – almost 3 million
more than before the pandemic in 2019. The rush is causing problems in many places, including on the country’s smaller islands,
where rental cars cause traffic jams in the summer months.
