the old man can make portals tailored for spying that only let light pass, and only from one end, so
the sending-portal is invisible since light is not emitted from it.
however it can be noticed if observed from the back, it will seem there is a dark spot in the air where
light is being absorbed, but this can be circumvented with strategic placement e.g. overheard or
tightly placed with the back to a wall.
it is very difficult for other portal users to sense such spy portals due to their small footprint and
power usage, and additionally portal users are generally not attuned to the light passing through
portals and generally very few can customize their portals to block or allow certain things.
however if a portal is noticed and identified then with enough time and effort it might be possible to
learn how to sense its type or even make them
thus the king decided to recruit as many portal users as possible in order to crack this issue, both to
try to sense when a spy portal is opened nearby and to try to replicate the result through practice and
study
