Articles - singular
A and AN
Indefinite Articles:
“A – AN”
❑Indefinite articles are used when we talk
about something for the first time or when it
is not specific.

o Use "a" before consonant sounds.


Example: a dog, a book

o Use "an" before vowel sounds.


Example: an apple, an hour
Rules for using
“A – AN”
❑First Mention:
▪ Use a/an when you mention something for the first time.
Example: I saw a cat.

❑Jobs and Descriptions:


▪ Use a/an to describe jobs or types.

o Example: She is a teacher. / He is an engineer.

❑Countable Nouns:
▪ Use a/an only with singular countable nouns.

o Example: I have a car. (not "I have cars.")


Choosing between
“A – AN”
❑Use "a" before:
o Consonant sounds (e.g., a book)

o Words like "university" (sounds like 'yoo') and


"one" (sounds like 'w’).

❑Use "an" before:


o Vowel sounds (e.g., an orange)

o Silent 'h' (e.g., an hour)
