MARXIST APPROACH IN LITERARY CRITICISM
Who is Karl Marx?
He was born on May 5, 1818 and died on March 14, 1883.
Abstraction:
(_20 minutes) German political thinker who wrote about economics and politics.
Proponent of this theory MARXISM, he lived in London at the time of
industrialization and travel extensively through Europe.
He saw a highly developed continent where tensions ran high because of social
inequality.
According to him, social inequality was a consequence of the arrival of the division
of labor and moreover, was what had led to the class society.
If a place works together; runs on wage-labor, then there would always be a class
struggle
Focuses on the struggle between capitalists and working class.
Conflict would immediately lead to a revolution in which the working class would
overthrow the capitalist class and seize control of the economy.
Friedrich Engels
He was born on November 28, 1820 and died on August 5, 1895.
Marx’s friend and collaborator in Marxist Approach.
Marx and Engels authored ‘The Communist Manifesto (1848)
The Communist Manifesto (1848)
A pamphlet outlining their theory of historical materialism and predicting the
ultimate overthrow of capitalism by the industrial proletariat.
Capitalist society is made up of two classes: the bourgeoisie or business owners,
who control the means of production, and the proletariat or workers, whose labor
transforms raw.
MARXISM
a cultural theory that embodies a set of social, economic, and political ideas that its
followers believe will enable them to interpret and change their world.
Marxist critics are also interested in how the lower or working classes are
oppressed- in everyday life and in literature.
In doing a MARXIST Literary Criticism:
1. Social classes that constitute the setting of the story
2. Characteristics of such social classes
3. Author’s idea about the prevailing social issue like oppression.
4. Technique of the author in using the social conflicts.
5. Resolving the embedded issue or problem
6. Author’s message on the issue or problem whether stated directly or implied
7. Author’s main purpose in writing the story far from entertaining the reader.
8. Background of the author and his views on economy, politics and society.
9. The place (time, period, culture, tradition, practices, economy, politics)where the literary
piece was written.
Examples:
PAT- A- CAKE
Pat-a-cake, pat- a- cake, baker’s man;
Bake me a cake as fast as you can;
Pat it and roll it, and mark it with a “B”
Put it in the oven for baby and me.
TITANIC (1997) –makes the Marxist class struggle obvious and is one of the most
obvious films, which portrays a difference in class and the struggle between them. It
is a symbol of capitalism and greed; the way the owners of the ship were striving to
make a ship faster, stronger and more luxurious for the upper classes is a
representation of what Karl Marx meant when he was talking about materialism.
The ship itself showed the class struggle, showing the first class passengers on the
upper deck and the third class passengers unable to reach the higher decks. This
movie conveys the inequality between first and third class passengers. During the
titanic collides with an iceberg, the crew lock the steel doors below to block the way
if the third class, who want to get onto lifeboats. This proves that ‘history is based
on unending class struggle” as Marx stated. It conveys that the inequality and unfair
treatment between bourgeoisie and proletariat must be corrected.
