Social Dances

Let Us Study

Social dancing is a non-competitive version of ballroom dancing.

“You Live as long as you dance – Rudolf Nureyev”

This inspiring quote by Rudolf Nureyev considered the world's greatest male
dancer gives us a profound sense of what can happen if we embrace dance.
And we are not even talking about professional dance. Dance in just its pure
form, performed for the sole purpose of letting overabundant joy spill out of
our hearts is enlivening.
Social dance is a significant category of dance forms where the primary focus
of the dancing is on socializing and sociability. Social dancing is usually with
a partner, the dancer is just being informal, relaxed and dancing for the
enjoyment of the partners rather than to meet the criteria of a dance school
or an audience. The test for social dancing success is how much the dance
partners have enjoyed the dance - not how they have danced in the eyes of
others or if they have followed a prescribed technique.

6
Social dancing is also dynamic, and the types of social dances and styles keep
changing with the times. Most people associate social dancing with ballroom
dancing, and indeed this form of dancing quite dominates the images people
make in their mind. But, circle dances, line dances, novelty dances, or just
club dancing in solo are also considered social dancing.

Social dances are intended for

participation rather than performance and
can be led and followed with relative ease.
These dances merely intended for
participation rather than performance. They
are also called Ballroom dances. Usually
these dances performed in pairs male and
female and can also performed in groups.
Social dancing is danced for enjoyment,
socialization, recreation and health. Social
dances are different from dance sport because
the previous is freer in nature and are primarily
intended to widen one’s social horizon, for
recreation and fitness. Dance sport performed in
competitions and are referred to as competitive
ballroom dancing.

Lesson TIPS FOR PACKING THE PERFECT FIRST
3 AID IN DANCING

Let Us Learn!

The success achieved by science and technology has made life simpler. The
privilege of only pressing a button or clicking a mouse is sadly leading us to a
sedentary lifestyle. It takes a fitter and healthier mind and body to fulfill the
demands of everyday routines and fitness, which can be accomplished by
active participation in physical sports such as participating in social fitness
dances. Relative dance activities will provide real life experiences and obstacles
to help you improve your fitness, skills and constructive attitudes in
combating COVID 19, such as discipline, health literacy, safe behaviors and
knowledge of how to administer first aid.

been injured or suddenly taken ill. It includes self-help and home care if
medical assistance is not available or delayed.

OBJECTIVES OF FIRST AID:

• To prolong life
• To alleviate suffering
• To prevent further or added injury
Why do I need to know First Aid?

First Aid is one of those skills that’s valuable on any occasion, in any walk of

COMMON INJURIES ENCOUNTERED
IN DANCING

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ANKLE_SPRAIN_01b.JPG

SPRAINED ANKLE - An ankle sprain is

when the thick tissues called ligaments
that connect your bones to each other
are overstretched or torn causing
inflammation and tenderness.

How do dancers get a sprained Ankle?

• Landing incorrectly after a jump.

• Tripping whilst running into position during a troupe routine.
• Not being properly trained and prepared for dancing in heeled shoes.
• Dancing on uneven surfaces.
• Being too physically tired and not concentrating causing a misstep.
• Wearing footwear that is too big or old such as jazz shoes that have
outworn their sole grip or have holes in the toes or ballet shoes with
loose ribbons.
• Dancing outside in flip flops or on the pavement.

FIRST AID
• Immediately begin the RICE method.

• Rest -immediately stop dancing or putting weight on the foot and ankle.

• Ice – Place an ice compact over the painful area of the ankle.

• Compression – wrap the ankle with a bandage (never too tightly as this
can inhibit blood flow)

• Elevation: Raise the ankle to encourage fluids to flow initially away from
the area so that swelling does not become so severe it restricts blood
flow to the foot.

strain. The first level although still
painful is when only a few muscle fibers
have been torn with the muscle just
generally needs to recover from being
overstretched. The third level is a total tear across all of the muscle fibers with
the second level being somewhere in the middle of the two.

How do dancers pull and tear muscles?

• Not warming up
• Pushing a stretch too far
• Bouncing in a stretch
• Cooling down between what you warmed up to do
• Tight muscles from not balancing stretching with strengthening

FIRST AID
Begin with the RICE method!

REST
Don’t be tempted to stretch the muscle or use it! For the first few days
especially, the muscle needs time to begin healing.

ICE
Ice the muscle to relieve pain and to help reduce inflammation and swelling.

COMPRESSION
Dancers most regularly tear their hamstrings or adductor muscles which are located
nearby. Wearing a pair of compression tights or bike shorts can help to increase the
blood flow and draining of inflammation fluids through the lymphatic system helping
to decrease recovery time. You can also get compression sleeves and socks for other
areas of the body.

ELEVATION
Elevating the limb with the torn muscle whilst actively making you rest will also
promote less swelling and the flushing of toxins from the area.

Snapping Hip Syndrome - Like its name

suggests, this injury is characterized by
the snapping or popping noise that one
hears coming from their hip when
moving the leg from the hip joint. It
happens when the tendon rubs over a
bony structure of the pelvis.

How do dancers get Snapping Hip Syndrome?

The injury is generally caused when muscles on one side of the pelvis,
buttocks, lower back and or hip area are weak whilst the other side is tight. It
can be caused when dancers have a favorite side and tend to neglect the other
side or leg as a result. It’s not usually an injury that causes the dancer to
immediately have to stop. It will sometimes happen once or twice every couple
of lessons before becoming more consistent and irritating. But if caught early
treatment and rehabilitation is a lot easier if left to become so unbearable the
dancer has to stop dancing completely.

FIRST AID
If the injury is not severe, meaning the popping has only just started to occur
you might want to begin treatment at home with RICE.
Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A tendon in your pelvic area is inflamed
and irritated and the inflammation needs to be reduced.

Pain Relief
Pain relief in the form of over the counter inflammation medicine taken as
directed may help to enable you to begin rehabilitation.

Foam rolling
Use a foam roller to reduce the tightness of the muscles around the pelvis, thighs
and buttocks.

Let Us Reflect

Now that you have mastered the fundamentals of social dancing and
its relation to the maintenance and growth of an active and safe lifestyle, it is
now your turn to share with your family, friends and immediate community
what you have mastered.

The true test of your interpretation of the concepts and values of social
dance merged with exercise is your ability to adapt it to your experiences in
real life. It is possible that while keeping yourself active in physical activities,
reading all about social dancing, dance mixers, exercise and first aid would
make you a fitter and healthier person.

Only by improving yourself may you impact others' commitment and

willingness to improve their own fitness activities. Fitness is contagious, just
like what they are saying. So, step on and impact it with your culture. He or
she will also be able to become a more active community member and
contribute to nation-building and good citizenship if everyone is fit enough to
carry out his or her everyday routines.

While having knowledge and skills in applying First aid gives us benefits that
It allows those trained with the potentially lifesaving ability to assist an injured
or ill person during a variety of emergency situations. A person trained and
knowledgeable in even the very basics of First Aid can be of extreme
importance in assisting the injured person(s) until emergency responders
arrive. The more people that are First Aid trained and knowledgeable the more
the community as a whole benefit.
