Research indicates that sleep needs vary among individuals and age groups. Two factors that play
a major role in the amount required for productivity and happiness are basal sleep need and sleep
debt. Basal sleep need is the amount required for optimal performance and sleep debt is the
cumulative loss from poor habits or interruptions. Healthy adults generally need seven to eight
hours of sleep, though sleep debt may still cause fatigue. Lack of sleep can impair productivity,
memory, and health, potentially leading to diabetes, heart disease, and increased mortality.
Oversleeping's impact is often linked with depression and low socioeconomic status. To determine
personal sleep needs, you should (observe your own productivity and alertness and the feeling
after different amounts of sleep. There are a few things you can do to improve your quality of
sleep: (establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, creating a
comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding electronics in bed. General sleep guidelines suggest
varying hours based on age: 12-18 for newborns, 14-15 for infants, 12-14 for toddlers, 11-13 for
preschoolers, 10-11 for school-aged children, 8.5- 9.25 for teens, and 7-9 for adults. Prioritizing

Globalization has significantly impacted the way we eat and view food. With the world becoming
more connected, dishes from different countries are now easily accessible in supermarkets and
restaurants. For instance, sushi, a Japanese delicacy, can be enjoyed in many parts of the world,
while Italian pizza has become a global favorite.
Globalization has also increased the availability of seasonal fruits and vegetables all year round.
However, there are concerns about its effects. Imported foods may be cheaper, but they often travel
long distances, which can harm the environment due to increased carbon emissions. Additionally,
traditional cuisines in some regions are being replaced by fast food, leading to health problems
like obesity.
On the positive side, globalization promotes cultural exchange through food. People can learn
about different cultures by trying their dishes. Despite the challenges, globalization has
transformed the way we experience food, making it more diverse and interconnected than ever
before.

A robot is a machine. But it is not just any machine. It is a special kind of machine. It is a machine
that moves. It follows instructions. The instructions come from a computer. Because it is a
machine, it does not make mistakes. And it does not get tired. And it never complains. Unless you
tell it to! Robots are all around us. Some robots are used to make things. For example, robots can
help make cars. Some robots are used to explore dangerous places. For example, robots can help
explore volcanoes. Some robots are used to clean things. These robots can help vacuum your
house. Some robots can even recognize words. They can be used to help answer telephone calls.
Some robots look like humans. But most robots do not. Most robots just look like machines.
Long ago, people imagined robots. Over 2,000 years ago, a famous poet imagined robots. The
poet’s name was Homer. His robots were made of gold. They cleaned things and they made things.
But they were not real. They were imaginary. Nobody was able to make a real robot. The first
real robot was made in 1961. It was called Unimate. It was used to help make cars. It looked like
a giant arm. In the future, we will have even more robots. They will do things that we can’t do. Or
they will do things that are too dangerous for us. Robots will help us fight fires. They will help us
fight wars. They will help us fight sick. They will help us discover things. They will help make
life better.

Colour blindness or colour vision deficiency is a condition where you cannot see certain colours
in the usual way. Colour blindness does not cause any blindness or lack of vision. People who are
colour-blind will be confused about some colours and will not see some colours as brightly as
people with normal vision. The condition is usually inherited and is present from birth. However,
it can also happen later in life from damage to the brain or eyes. If you have the red-green colour
blindness, you will find it hard to tell reds from greens. Most red-green colour-blind people could
not know whether the piece of meat they have cooked is rare or well done and they are unlikely to
be able to distinguish between green and ripe tomatoes. Blue-yellow colour blindness is less
common than red-green colour blindness. If you have blue-yellow colour blindness, you will find
it hard to tell blues from yellows. Complete colour blindness is much less common than partial
colour blindness. If you have this, you cannot see any colours at all. Certain occupations are not
appropriate for people with colour vision deficiency and people with the condition may even be
prohibited from working in some environments. Some professional choices, especially some
typical jobs requiring colour vision, such as graphic designers, chemists and make-up artists, can
be negatively impacted by a colour blindness diagnosis. There is no cure for colour vision
deficiency passed down in families, but most people can adjust to it. Nowadays, there are special
glasses with tinted lenses that can help people see some colours better and mobile apps that can
help people identify colours are available at the markets.

Generally, people tend to stay happy throughout their life and they try every means to achieve that
goal. People who achieve happiness are more successful since their brains function significantly
better in a positive mood than in a negative, neutral or stressed state. And people who are happy
have stronger and closer relationships with friends and are viewed more positively by others. Thus,
there is a direct relation between the level of happiness that a person has and his achievements.
Obviously, more people are willing to communicate with a happy man than a melancholic one.
Being happy brings major benefits for a better lifestyle. The feelings of happiness in their bodies
reduce stress and improve their immune systems. Therefore, they feel more comfortable at work
and have sound sleep at night.
In today’s world, people have to struggle with their stressful lives and the number of people who
are not satisfied with their lives has been increasing year by year. Everyone pursues happiness but
different people have different targets – being a rich man, being a famous celebrity and being a
successful person. In fact, to be a happier man, one must have high self-esteem and self-control,
so he can get on well with others. As a result, the best way to lead life is to live in the moment.

VI. Read the passage.

One of the important aims in medicine is to enable the body to resist disease. Nature herself seeks
to do this, and, in a suitable environment of fresh air and congenial work, can maintain a healthy
body equal to combating many forms of infection. This immunity can be safeguarded by special
inoculation, as, for example, against diphtheria, the efficiency of which is demonstrated by the
low and still decreasing infant mortality figures in Britain for the disease. It should also be
remembered that the improvement in general health, through improved physical education and
personal and communal hygiene, contributes in no small measure to the body’s fitness and
adaptability to even a hostile environment.
An interesting example of possible reaction to disease is to be found in the attempt to exterminate
the rabbit pest. The Government purposely introduced myxomatosis, a disease usually fatal among
rabbits. In successive summers during recent years, epidemics of the disease have resulted in a
high mortality rate, and this has been welcomed by farmers in view of the fact that, although rabbits
were originally introduced into the Dominion by Europeans, they have now become so numerous
that the erection and maintenance of extensive wire-netting has been a serious economic problem.

Advertisements are a core part of marketing since they significantly influence the shopping habits
of people. This is especially true with children, and marketing experts are becoming more and
more aware of this fact. Many television advertisements for children are short and fun, usually in
the form of imaginative cartoons. However, the problem is that many of the foodstuffs marketed
to children are the least nutritious ones. They contain more fat, salt, and sugar than healthier
options, and many packages include various types of incentives from toys, unique boxes to
interactive websites to attract children. Unfortunately, children do not think as critically as adults
when they see advertisements on television, and they do not realize that the advertisements are
meant to persuade them or their parents to spend money on the product or service.
These are the main reasons why many countries have strict restrictions on advertisements aimed
at children. Some countries ban such advertisements altogether, while other countries limit the
duration that they can appear on television or the products that can be displayed. Nevertheless, a
few countries argue that advertisements help children develop the ability to think before they buy
things when they grow up, and to know when they are being persuaded.

We all have different beliefs about our abilities and these beliefs shape how we approach
challenges and failures. Some people have a growth mindset, which means they hold an internal
belief that their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work.
Others have a fixed mindset, which means they believe that their abilities are innate and cannot
be changed much. Those with a growth mindset tend to be more resilient and willing to take on
challenges, but they may be more prone to overestimating their abilities and taking on too much
at once. While a growth mindset is generally seen as more advantageous, there are also benefits to
having a fixed mindset. For example, those with a fixed mindset may be more comfortable with
routine and may be less prone to taking unnecessary risks. However, they may also be more likely
to hold themselves back from new experiences and opportunities. However, it is important to
recognise the limitations of a fixed mindset and embrace growth and change when necessary.
Ultimately, the key is to find a balance between two mindsets, embracing growth and learning
while also acknowledging one’s natural talents and abilities. Adopting a growth mindset can be
challenging, particularly for those who have spent much of their lives with a fixed mindset. It may
require a shift in the perspective and a willingness to take on challenges.

Recycling is an important part of taking care of our planet. New innovations are making it easier.
Today, some companies are now using robots to sort waste. These robots can work faster and more
accurately than humans and separate different types of materials, like plastic, glass, and metal.
Another innovation is the use of chemical recycling. Traditional recycling methods often cannot
handle mixed or dirty plastics. Chemical recycling breaks down plastics into their basic parts. It
helps to recycle materials that were previously considered non-recyclable.
Furthermore, there are new ways to recycle food waste. Some places are turning food scraps into
energy. This process is called anaerobic digestion. It involves breaking down food waste in a
sealed tank, producing biogas. Biogas can be used for electricity, heating, or fuelling vehicles.
Innovations in recycling are not limited to just technology. Many communities are also improving
their recycling programmes. They are educating people about recycling and providing better
facilities. This makes it easier for everyone to participate, helps reduce waste, and protects our
environment. In conclusion, recycling innovations are making a big difference. They improve
efficiency and make it easier to recycle more types of materials. These advancements prove that
with creativity and effort, we can find better ways to recycle.
