DESIGN A SOCK FOR DOBBY

‘Socks are Dobby’s favourite, favourite clothes, sir!’

Knowing how much Dobby loves socks, use the craft materials from the previous
activity to decorate the sock below. The wilder and weirder the better!
Once you’ve finished making your sock, cut it out and show it to others. Find a partner
and make your socks into an odd pair that you think Dobby would like.

USEFUL INFORMATION

CREATE YOUR OWN SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT

AND WIZARDRY
‘Harry laughed, but didn’t voice the amazement he felt at hearing about
other wizarding schools. He supposed, now he saw representatives of so many
nationalities in the campsite, that he had been stupid never to realise that
Hogwarts couldn’t be the only one.’

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire readers are introduced for the first time to
wizarding schools other than Hogwarts: Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.
Photocopy the sheet below and hand it out to students, asking them to create their own
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You could extend the activity by asking students to
draw the school or invent a school uniform.

WHICH WAND?
The wand chooses the wizard …
Maple and phoenix feather. Ebony and unicorn hair. Beech and dragon heartstring.
Which wand would choose you?
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Harry visits Ollivanders: Makers of Fine
Wands. Mr Ollivander tells Harry that wands can be made from many types of wood
and that wands have a magical substance at their centre. At Ollivanders these magical
cores can be, for example, a unicorn hair, a phoenix tail feather or a dragon heartstring.
The wand that chooses Harry is eleven inches long, made of holly wood, with a
phoenix feather at its core.
In the space below, sketch your wand. What shape is it? Does it have any distinctive
features? What special material would provide its magical core?
Types of wood: Beech, Mahogany, Holly, Oak, Willow, Maple, Ebony, Cedar, Yew,
Pine, Maple, Elm

My wand is made of:

Its magical core is:

MAKE A WAND
If you want to get really creative at home, you can make your own wand. Use either
rolled up card or twigs to create the wand shape, paint it brown and add decorations
and magical symbols to it.
You could use old-fashioned luggage labels to write what wood and magical core the
wand has been crafted from and what type of spells it is particularly good for.
