Child Soldier Thesis
Child Soldier Children in US are perceived as the next generation, the future per say. We have
multiple laws across the country to punish many ways of what we call is child abuse. While some
may argue more could be done, I feel the intention to protect the children in this country is not
questionable for most people. While reading these articles about children soldiers, one thing is
clear: poverty and education seems to be the common ground why children are either forced, or
willingly join an army. Children s development is a complex subject. Their maturity levels progress
as the childgrows older; however it has to do a lot with the environment they grow up in. One thing
that stroked me when I was reading this article was poverty. We know many countries, such as Sri
Lanka do not have the advantages as other countries, therefore people living there are under extreme
poverty. Children feel so insecure about their future, particularly when it comes to food. This type
of insecurity drives children to look for secure sources of food, that leads them to join an army
(Somasundaram, 2002 page... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However this is not a reality for children in war zones. Many of them get abducted from schools, out
of their homes, or anywhere the rebels or the government is able to get to them. But, why are
children the preferred soldier ? According to Somasundaram in her article Child Soldier:
Understanding the Context, children are easily impressed, which is the choice of some military
leaders. They believe children are less likely to question orders than adults due to fear
(Somasundaram, 2002 page 1270). Children easily believe what they are told, as their experience
and maturity levels are not the same as adults. In addition, uneducated children are more likely to
believe these leaders as they may not know any
Use of Propaganda the U.S. War in Iraq Essay example
Use of Propaganda the U.S. War in Iraq The word propaganda comes from the Vatican. The phrase
congregatio de propaganda fide (The congregation for the propagation of the faith) was used to
support the catholic faith in response to the Protestant Reformation (Labash, 20 Dec, 2001).
Propaganda is everywhere and has been around for a long time. Every newspaper, magazine, news
channel, radio station, advertisement, or any other types of mass media contain elements of
propaganda. Propaganda is often given a negative connotation due to its history of power and
control; as in the Hitler s regime, but in reality the definition is very simple. According to Webster s
College Dictionary, propaganda is information or ideas methodically... Show more content on

It is really no more than the organization of methods designed to persuade people to think and
behave in a certain way, and in wartime that usually means getting them to fight or to support the
fight (Labash, 20 Dec, 2001). Wartime propaganda is so important that it can often be used as a
weapon because of the power that comes with public support. The ability to win public support
can be just as important as the ability to fight the war. HISTORY OF WARTIME
PROPAGANDA Wartime propaganda has been a major influence in many, if not all, of the major
wars. One of the first known uses of war propaganda was by Alexander the Great. After being
forced to retreat in a battle Alexander the Great realized that it would be a disadvantage to show
he was weak and had to retreat. He overcame this problem by using propaganda to intimidate the
opposing army. Alexander s army made oversized armor and helmets and left them behind as they
retreated. His intent was that the opposing army would be intimidated and not pursue his army
because the oversized armor made Alexander s army look like giants (Labash, 20 Dec, 2001).
Another occurrence of wartime propaganda occurred in Vietnam where Americans would kidnap and
blindfold Vietnamese fisherman. Then the Americans would take them to an island and tell them
that it was part of a resistance group called The Sacred Sword of the Patriot League. The fishermen
were then returned back to the

John Steinbeck Culture
John Steinbeck s novel The Pearl is full of lessons to be learned, but there is one that is mainly
ignored. This lesson is none other than the songs in Kino s head, from his culture and environment.
It seems to be something silly, something that does not matter to the story, but, it is one of the most
important lessons the story has. It tells us about his character, his culture, and his beliefs. The
songs help us understand the truth that other cultures believe and how we can bring them to
Christ. In order to understand the meaning of the songs, the story must be told. Kino was an
average man, with a wife Juana and a son Coytitio, living near La Paz Mexico. In this time, the
preexisting culture was being overruled by rich Spaniards and their influence, and it was having a
huge impact on Kino s people. They had little, and could barely keep themselves alive, while the
people in the city of stone and plaster (Steinbeck 8) were affluent.... Show more content on

Songs about everything, Song of the family (Steinbeck 2) Song of the Enemy (Steinbeck 6), Song of
the Pearl That Might Be (Steinbeck 17) They aren t just there to add mood to the story, they are
rooted deep in what these people believe. It is also worth mentioning that the songs are not
audible, nobody is following Kino around playing music to his life. He hears the songs in his
head, in an almost supernatural way. He may believe that these songs come from a god. He says
that it is part of his culture, that His people had once been great makers of songs so that
everything they saw or thought or did became a song (Steinbeck 2). The songs were part of their
culture. It also seems as if the songs are their religion, that it is a bizarre mix of Christianity,
voodo, and old polytheistic religions. It is described in how Juana prays; Juana was making the
magic of a prayer... to tear the luck out of the god s hands. (Steinbeck
Hurricane Katrina Discrimination
Hurricane Katrina was a terrible Natural Disaster which swept away much of New Orleans,
Louisiana leaving little behind. Causes and outcomes with discrimination in race and ethnicity after
Hurricane Katrina.
When thinking of a certain town or city, people will remember what it is known for or what they
saw. When one is thinking of New Orleans, Louisiana they will more than likely think of African
Americans (Pg.90). The Latino population did not start to appear in New Orleans until the late
twentieth century (Hernandez Leon, Pg.90). Following Hurricane Katrina, African Americans felt
frivolous or at risk as Latino s were receiving more attention (Pg.101). In fact, there are facts that
prove why African Americans have a right to feel this way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The part of the city where poor African Americans resided was hit the hardest (Fussell, Pg.95).
Unfortunately, this neighborhood was the last on the list to be cleaned up and rebuilt. The African
American residents were sent to the New Orleans Superdome, where many were taken for shelter
(Pg.110). Some New Orleans citizens might say that Hurricane Katrina had a positive impact on
their lives, teaching them how to live and survive during such a terrible time as well as the situation
making them stronger however, this was not the case for African Americans (Pg.109). Despite all of
the horrific situations, the community of New Orleans learned how to be prepared if there happens

In the past females have achieved less well than boys at higher levels in the education system,
then during the 1990 , the girls over took boys at all levels in the education system. The
percentage of females in the UK achieving two or more A levels or equivalent has increased from
20% in 1990 to 42% in 2006. Over the same time period, the percentage of males achieving the
same level increased from 18% to 33%. On the other hand, there still continues to be a large
difference in the choice of subjects by males and females. Even with the national curriculum being

However, its argued that the improvement of females in education could be the result of the decline
of males, therefore making the gap between gender differences not that significant.

Secondly, the interaction between teachers and male and female students. Sociologist Francis
(2000) argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more
frequently and harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more
attention than girls as they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less
attention than boys, also in terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also
more likely to be disciplined than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in
school which may result in gender and ethnic differences in achievement.

On the other hand, many sociologists have argued the importance of external factors in influencing
gender differences in achievement. Feminism strives for equality in society for men and women
and has questioned the typical role of males and females in society and challenges the role of
women being the housewife. Feminists have had a great influence on improving girls self esteem
and aspirations. Sue Sharpe s

Introduction

For a long time researchers have been trying to study behavior and offer solutions to some of the
behavior problems. Yeager et al. (2013) carried out a study to determine how criticism can be
provided effectively without undermining motivation as well as children s selfconfidence. For a
long time there has been an issue between white teachers and students from minority groups such as
the African Americans who feel that negative feedback or criticism from their teacher s are a cause
of misbelieve in their capability to accomplish tasks. Hence, they do not respond positively to

According to cognitive dissonance theory clashing/contradicting thoughts cause discomfort among
individuals. Any critic from the teacher s is taken as a negative stereotype on the black population s
inability to complete tasks or as a result of discrimination and prejudice (Cohen, Steele, 2002). The
articles results have helped describe the mistrust behavior among African American learners who are
said to have mistrust for schools/institutions. It also helps in understanding the behavior or cause for
the mistrust among the minority groups. The research correctly predicted that wise feedback could
change the minority group s perception on criticism and increase their trust for teachers and the
institution. Having a good understanding of the behavior problem the researchers were able to
manipulate events and the leaner s
Environmental Management And Urban Planning Practices
Since the foundation of the principles of sustainable development, the interpretation and level of
integration of sustainable principles have varied greatly on a global scale. As a result of the
Bruntland Report s (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) founding
definition of sustainable development, there has been a drive towards the goal of a balance between
the integration and policy frameworks of economic growth, social justice and environmental concern
(Getzner, 1999; Connelly, 2007). However, the plethora of differing views on sustainability, and a
global society fixated on economic growth, has created multiple approaches (Williams Millington,
2004). The approaches vary in their effectiveness to address principles... Show more content on

The principle allows natural capital and the capacity of ecosystems to be valued in the functions and
services they provide to human well being (Pelenc Ballet, 2015). Substitutability is the weak
sustainability approach to ecological economics and assumes that natural capital and manufactured
(man made) capital possess no differences in the provided well being benefits, so therefor, they are
substitutable (Pelenc Ballet, 2015). The problem with this approach is the view that natural capital is
purely a resource, and degradation of natural resources is justifiable, when technological
development will provide a substitute and resolve any ecological problems that arise (Williams
Millington, 2004). However, by actually valuing the environment, this approach strives to manage
natural capital more effectively and sustainably by developing renewable resources in addition to
more efficient uses of existing natural resources (Williams Millington, 2004). Though as a whole, the
substitutionary approach is less concerned with sustaining the health of the Earth s ecological
aspects and more sustaining development and the economy (Williams Millington, 2004).

Calculation of Preferred Dividends
How to Calculate Preferred Dividends

Preferred stock (or preference shares) is a special class of stock that pays a fixed dividend set at
the time of issuance. Also, preferred dividends must be paid before common stock dividends. To
calculate the dividends for preferred stocks, you need to multiply the par value of the shares by the
dividend percentage.

Example 1:
If the dividend percentage is 8 percent and the preferred stock was issued at $20 per share, then the
annual dividend is: 8% * $20 = $1.60 per share.

Example 2:
If you owned 10,000 6.5 percent preferred shares which were issued at a par value of $50 per share,
then:
The dividend per share of preferred stock = $50 * 6.5% = $3.25
Total Preferred Dividends = 10,000 shares * $50 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is an indication of the cash return that shareholders receive from holding shares in the listed
company.

Formula:
Dividend Per Share (DPS) = Dividends paid to equity shareholders / Number of issued equity shares

Example 1:
Bronze Ltd announced a total of $200,000 in dividends over the last year, and it has 4 million
shares outstanding, then the DPS would be: 200,000 / 4,000,000 = $0.05 per share.

Example 2:
Calculate the DPS for Modern Product Ltd., given the following information:
Dividends proposed $30,000
Ordinary shares of $0.50 each: $600,000

Solution:
Number of shares issued = 600,000 / 0.50 = 1,200,000
DPS = 30,000 / 1,200,000 = $0.025

Tamil Genocide Protest in Toronto

Greater Toronto Area is home to about 200,000 tamils, so there was no doubt that they wanted the
canadian government to take action. Though the war between the Sri Lankan Government and The
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, (a terrorist group who wanted a separate nation) lasted 25 for
years. The final stage of war is what erupted the international protest, among many immigrated
tamils. This is because the war went out of limits, and innocent citizen began to die as they were
being used as human shields. The government and LTTE also put journalist restrictions, which
isolated innocent tamils. The United Nations Humanitarian Organization believes approximately
90,000 victims were killed. Furthermore aid agencies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Tamil Canadians aimed to be heard by the president of The United States, Barack Obama, Prime
minister of Canada at the time, Stephen Harper, and lastly the consulate general of Sri Lanka,
Bandula Jayasekera. The first notable protest began on January 30th 2009, it was a 5 km human
chain that lined up along key streets in Toronto. Citizen held signs that signified the injustice
going on such as respect tamil sovereignty , stop the genocide , Canada aids pay for genocide and
much more. Unfortunately, reports claim that the consulate general Bandula referred the protesters
as terrorist and did not permit entrance. The University of Toronto, and Ryerson s, Tamil student
association groups also raised awareness on campus, through poster, hunger strikes, speeches, and
staged demonstrations. Another major protest occurred at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February
4th 2009. This protest caught the eyes of some politicians. Including, Jack Layton (former leader
of NDP) who said he would call a meeting at the house of commons to discuss the issues. Also
Bev Oda (former MP) stated that the government would provide financial aid to the affected
civilians, with the help of World Vision and Médecins Sans Frontières. Two months later the
protest began on April 6th which was non stop and lasted for 15 days. The ottawa protest came to

Julius Caesar Movie Vs. 80 s
The Shakespearean play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar has been portrayed in numerous movies
over multiple decades. I personally prefer the 1950 s version starring Marlon Brando as Antony
over the 1970 s version starring Charlton Heston as Antony instead. The 1970 s version did have
the advantage of being in color, but the 1950 s version acting had much more passion. The
difference between the two actors as Antony was like day and night for me. Marlon Brando s acting
had heart compared to Charlton Heston s which felt as if he were reading it straight off the script.
During Brando s Antony s monologue after the conspirators had left, I could feel the emotion the
actorwas trying to express through his character. The message was much more clear
