I guarded my heart for so long
Only to be broken by you in a span of a month

Nakikita ko na sarili ko sa loob ng simbahan naglalakas habang nakasuot ng puti na gown at nakahawak
ng pula na rosas. Naghihintay sa akin sa altar si Mark.
Tu-du-tu-du.
Binuksan ko na aking mga mata and shut off the alarm clock. Bwisit na panaginip yun, sana in real life
nalang please.
Nagluto ako ng kimchi noodles and egg para kakainin ko while mag-review for major exams next week,
but I couldn’t finish my food kasi may special announcement daw si ate sabi ni mama. Kinabahan ako
bigla kasi hindi naman sa ganitong paraan mag announce si ate.
I went down sa living room and viola – our school’s charismatic playboy, Kyle, is sitting on our sofa with
his older brother, Dominic and then tabi ni Dom si ate ko. Unfortunately, they just live across the street.
Don’t get me wrong – I don’t hate Kyle even if he bullied me a few times when we were in elementary
(college na kami ngayon; both sa University of Santo Tomas kami nag-aaral- siya Civil Engineering while
ako Political Science). It’s just that I don’t know how to deal with people like him. I only have a small
circle of friends; I don’t talk to each and everyone sa klase ko. Feeling ko he thinks the same way kasi
ever since nag college kami, kahit classmates kami sa English class hindi na rin niya ako pinapansin.
“Cath!” My sister, Trisha, exclaimed. “Buti naman gising ka na.”
“Kanina pa ate,” sabi ko habang umiiwas tignan si Kyle. “Ano ba yung announcement? Nakakakaba
naman.”
“Oo nga, ano yung sasabihin ninyo,” sabi ni Kyle tapos sabay tingin sa akin.
Dom and Trisha stared at each and slowly nag holding hands. Dun palang gulat na gulat na ang mukha ni
Kyle. “We’re engaged!” Trisha almost shouted with a big smile on her face.
Biglang napatayo si Richard. “Engaged? Seryoso?”
“Paano nangyari? Hindi naman naming alam na kayo pala.” This is the truth. Wala sa amin ni mama ang
may alam na magkarelasyon lang pala sila.
“After five months of dating –“ I interrupted kuya Dominic. “Wait lang. Five months palang kayo? Tapos
kasal agad?”
“Cath, we love each other. I couldn’t be happier,” sagot ni ate.
“Sige, kayo bahala,” I said sarcastically.
“Anyway, I’ve known Trisha and this family for more than 10 years already. The two of us have been
friends since a long time ago. Kaya I’m sure she is the one for me.” He then intently stared at Trisha’s
eyes. He narrated how he and my sister developed feelings for each other for years but did not act upon
it until the last six months as they both did not want anything to disrupt their friendship at first. But true
love wins nga daw so naging sila in the end. Parang romantic comedy lang sa kdrama noh?
After a while, I stepped out of the living wrong and headed outside the house with a phone in my hands.
I called Mark who has been texting me since hours ago. “Hon sorry, ngayon ko lang na check phone ko.”
“Okay lang. Ano ginagawa mo ngayon?”
I told him about my sister’s engagement and he was shocked as well. Ni remind niya din ako na at the
end of the day, my sister is old enough to decide for herself. He also asked if Kyle is here. “Yes, he is,” I
answered.
