DAVID AND GOLIATH

One day, as recorded in the Holy Scriptures, the Philistine army prepared to engage Israel
in battle. Among them stood a formidable warrior named Goliath, as a giant, clad in heavy
bronze armor and armed with a sword, a spear, and a massive shield. He issued a bold and
blasphemous challenge to the armies of the living God, defying the covenant people of Israel.

Meanwhile, a young shepherd named David, a man after God’s own heart, faithfully tended
his father’s flock. His older brothers were enlisted in King Saul’s army. One day, Jesse,
David’s father, commissioned him to deliver provisions to his brothers on the battlefield.

Jesse: “Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and
hasten to their camp. Also carry these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See
how your brothers fare and bring back a token from them.”

Upon his arrival in the Valley of Elah, David heard Goliath’s arrogant defiance.

Goliath: “Why do you come out to battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of
Saul? Choose a man to fight me. If he prevails, we shall serve you. But if I prevail, you shall
serve us.”

The Philistine soldiers mocked and taunted Israel’s army, while no one dared respond to
Goliath’s provocations.

Yet David, filled with zeal for the Lord of Hosts, inquired:…

David: “What shall be done for the one who defeats this Philistine and removes this reproach
from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the
living God?”
David’s inquiry provoked the anger of his eldest brother, Eliab.

Eliab: “Why have you come here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the
wilderness? I know your arrogance and the wickedness of your heart.”

Yet, David’s unwavering confidence in God’s sovereignty. Hearing of David’s bold faith, Saul
summoned him.

King Saul: “You are not able to fight this Philistine. You are but a youth, and he has been a
warrior since his youth.”
David: “Your servant has killed both lion and bear while shepherding his father’s flock. This
Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
King Saul: “Go, and may the LORD be with you.”

Though Saul offered him armor, David declined it, choosing instead to confront Goliath with
what he knew — a shepherd’s staff, a sling, and a five smooth stones.

When Goliath beheld David, he mocked, scorning him as unworthy.

Goliath: “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?”

David: “You come to me with sword and spear, but I come to you in the name of the LORD
of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied!”

Then David, empowered by divine strength, slung a stone that struck Goliath in the forehead.
The giant fell face down to the earth. David ran, took the Philistine’s sword, and severed his
head. When the Philistines saw that their champion had perished, they fled in terror.
Philistine Soldier: “Goliath is fallen! Israel’s God is with them!!!

King Saul, witnessing this miraculous victory, inquired of Abner, the commander of the army:

King Saul: “Whose son is that young man?”

Abner: “As surely as you live, O King, I do not know.”

David was brought before Saul.

Abner: “Whose son are you, young man?”

David: “I am the son of your servant Jesse, of Bethlehem.”

Thus, the LORD granted victory to Israel through the faith and obedience of a young
shepherd. This narrative stands as a testimony that with unwavering faith in God, no
adversary is too great to overcome.

The End.
