Preparatory Courses for Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

University of London
Application for Admission

This guideline is for NEW applicants only.


Students who have already registered with University of London are not required to
apply for admission again.

For new applicants, please note the below:

Application for Preparatory Courses for Bachelor of Laws in PolyU SPEED is different from
application for LLB in the University of London (hereinafter referred to as “the university”). You
should ensure whether you would like to obtain the LLB award as offered by the university. If you
would like to obtain the LLB award, you should enroll in the university separately.

Preparatory courses offered by PolyU SPEED are a year round course that is targeted to take the
examinations in the following year. In this regards, if you would like to enroll our preparatory courses
for taking the university’s examinations. You should enroll the university’s November intake in
order to sit for the examinations in May/June of the following year, e.g. to enroll the November
intake in 2023, then you will sit for the examinations in May/June in 2024.

Application Validation Code for the Bachelor of Laws programme

Please be informed that an Application Validation Code (AVC) for the Bachelor of Laws
programme has been introduced by the university. It is important that it is an added step in the
application to ensure applicants who are studying with a Recognised Teaching Centre (RTC)
formally apply via the teaching centre route. Full details, please go to the University of London
website: https://www.london.ac.uk/courses/bachelor-laws.

Applicants should attend and study with a RTC (e.g. PolyU SPEED) so as to obtain an AVC to
process the registration procedure via the university’s online platform.

Kindly note that the deadline for admission to the November intake is 1 October 2024
(subject to the university’s application deadline).

(I) Enrolment with SPEED

Applicants should complete the attached SPEED application form and submit it to the SPEED
office by EMAIL (splondu@speed-polyu.edu.hk) or by mail before the closing date for application
together with the followings:

1. a payment confirmation page (for online payment);


2. a crossed cheque/ cashier’s order (made payable to “The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
with the full name and the course code at the back of the crossed cheque/ cashier's order;
and
3. a recent photo (size: 1” x 1.25” in jpeg format) for Facilities access card (Library Card)

Please note that if we do not receive the above documents (i.e. a completed application form, a
payment confirmation page/ a crossed cheque/ cashier’s order, and a recent photo), we will not
process your application.

Online payment: Application will normally be closed on the working day (Monday – Friday)
which is one week before the course start date.

Cheque payment: Application will normally be closed on the working day (Monday – Friday)
which is two weeks before the course start date.

Late application will NOT be entertained.

Successful applicants will receive a written notification from the School confirming their
enrolment and also the details for collecting the study materials from the SPEED office before
course commencement.

Unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing by the School and the course fees will be
returned.

(II) Applying for Admission to the University of London

Applicants may apply for admission to the university through one of the following ways:

(a) Online Submission:

1. Applicants should submit the application online at http://london.ac.uk/courses/bachelor-laws.


You are advised to read the Guidance notes
(https://www.evision.eisa.london.ac.uk/documents/guidanceNotesforOnlineApplications_UG.
pdf) for information about the online application process.

2. The university will process your application upon receiving all the necessary documentation
in support of your application*. The university will inform applicants the application results
directly by e-mail. It may take around 3 to 4 weeks.

3. In case there is no update on the application for more than 4 weeks after submission,
applicants may contact the university via the online enquiry form
(http://enquiries.londoninternational.ac.uk) for checking the application status.

*Verification of Documents by SPEED

Applicants will be required to upload verified copies of certificates/documents at the time you
submit your online applications to the University of London. SPEED is one of the authorised
institutions to verify documents on behalf of the university. For details and reservation, please
send an email to SPEED at splondu@speed-polyu.edu.hk.

Guide for Applicants


Instructions on completing the application form
1. Please complete the form in English and print in block letters.
2. Please complete ALL parts in full.
3. “Non-local student’ is defined as students holding −
(a) student visa/ entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
(HKSAR); OR
(b) visa/ entry permit under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) issued by the Director of Immigration
of HKSAR Government; OR
(c) dependent visa/ entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa/ entry permit by the Director
of Immigration of HKSAR Government.
Non-local applicants who possess only a visitor or tourist visa should neither be registered as students nor commence their studies.
If one holds a work permit and takes up a part-time course, he/ she will be regarded as a local student. Throughout the course of
study, it is the responsibility of individual students to ensure that their visas/ entry permits are valid. Non-local applicants with IANG
or dependent visa/ entry permit are required to attach a copy of their valid visa/ entry permit to the completed application form. On
admission, they will be required to provide the original visa/ entry permit for verification.
4. Please complete the application form clearly and accurately. Incomplete application forms will not be processed.
5. Please sign on the application form before submission.

6. Completed application form should be submitted to the School Office by email (splondu@speed-polyu.edu.hk) or by post together
with the following documents:
 payment confirmation page (for online payment only)
 a recent photo (size: 1” x 1.25”) for applying for a Facilities access card (Library Card) (if submit application via email please
provide the photo in jpeg format)
 a crossed cheque/ cashier’s order payable to “The Hong Kong Polytechnic University” for the required course fees
(please write your name and the course code at the back of the cheque/ cashier’s order)
7. Please arrange for your application to reach the School Office on or before the closing date of application as stated below. If we
do not receive the above documents (i.e. a completed application form, online payment confirmation page, and a recent photo or
a crossed cheque/ cashier’s order), we will not process your application.

8. For online payment (cashier’s order will be considered): Application will normally be closed on the working day (Monday – Friday)
which is one week before the course start date.
9. For cheque payment: Application will normally be closed on the working day (Monday – Friday) which is two weeks before the
course start date. [If the course start date is on Tuesday, the closing date will be the Tuesday that is two weeks before the course
start date. If the course start date is on Saturday or Sunday, the closing date will be the Friday that is two weeks before the course
start date. However, if the closing date falls on a public holiday, the working day (Monday – Friday) before the public holiday will
be the deadline.]
10. Late application will not be entertained.
Application results
11. Interested parties are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible since places are limited.
12. Offering of any courses is subject to sufficient applications.
13. Admission is at the sole discretion of the School. Applicants may be invited for interview and/ or written test as appropriate.
14. Successful applicants will receive a written notification from the School confirming their enrolment about one week before course
commencement.
15. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing by the School. Course fees will be returned to them by ordinary mail.
16. Please contact the School Office if you do not receive any notification two days before course commencement.

Discount and fee refund policies


17. Discount will only be given to applicants enrolling for more than one course in a single application. Please refer to the course fee
table on Section 2 of the Application Form.
18. Except for unsuccessful applications or course cancellation, course fees paid are NOT refundable. Fees paid and places allocated
on courses are not transferable after application.

Study materials from SPEED


19. Study materials are made available after successful registration and on payment of the course fee.
20. Additional study materials, if any, will be distributed in softcopy by email only.

Library card for students


21. All students will be issued a Facilities access card (Library Card) for entering the PolyU Main Campus and accessing to the Pao
Yue-kong Library. Rights to use any facilities on campuses are given at the discretion of the School.

Certification
22. A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to students who have attended 70% or more of the classes on a course.

Use of information
23. Personal data provided as part of an application for admission will, during the admission process, be used solely for the purpose
of admission, and in this connection the data will be handled by relevant offices within The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
(PolyU), the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE), SPEED and other partnering institutions in offering the
courses, if any.
24. Application documents of unsuccessful applicants will be destroyed after the admission process has been completed.
25. Application documents of successful applicants will become part of the student file and the data will thereafter be handled by
SPEED, CPCE, other offices of PolyU and other partnering institutions in offering the courses, if any.
26. Under the provisions of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, applicants have rights to request access to, and the correction of,
their personal data. Applicants/ students wishing to access or make corrections to their personal data should submit written
requests to SPEED.
