Chapter 1
James Henry Trotter was once a very happy little boy. He lived by the
sea with his kind and loving parents. They had a beautiful life together.
James used to play with other children, run on the beach, and live in a
peaceful home filled with love. But one day, something terrible
happened that changed James’s life forever. His parents went to
London and were eaten by a wild rhinoceros that had escaped from
the zoo. It was a strange and shocking accident.
After that, James was sent to live with his two aunts, Aunt Sponge and
Aunt Spiker. They lived in a crooked house on top of a high hill. These
aunts were nothing like his parents. They were mean, selfish, and very
cruel. They made James do all the housework and never gave him any
love or care. He had no toys, no books, and no friends. He was not
allowed to play or even talk much. His room was small and bare, and
he had to eat very little food.
Aunt Sponge was fat and lazy. Aunt Spiker was thin and sharp-
tongued. Both of them enjoyed making James feel miserable. They
never smiled at him or treated him kindly. Every day, they gave him
new chores to do and yelled at him if he made even the smallest
mistake. From the top of the hill, James could see the sea and the
house where he once lived, but he was never allowed to go near it.
This chapter shows how James's life went from happy and full of love
to sad and lonely. Readers feel sorry for James and hope that
something good will happen to him soon. It sets the stage for the
magical adventure that will begin later.
Chapter 2
Three years had passed since James started living with Aunt Sponge
and Aunt Spiker, but his life had not improved at all. One very hot
summer day, James was outside in the garden, chopping wood under
4
the burning sun. His face was red from the heat and sweat, and he was
very tired. His two aunts sat nearby in comfortable chairs, drinking tall
glasses of cold lemonade and doing nothing.
Instead of helping James or letting him rest, the aunts yelled at him to
work faster. They were very lazy and bossy. While they sat and
relaxed, they started arguing with each other. Aunt Sponge, who was
fat and greedy, claimed she was the most beautiful woman in the
world. Aunt Spiker, who was thin and mean, disagreed and said she
was the real beauty. They insulted each other and made silly rhymes
about their looks.
Meanwhile, James continued to chop wood, feeling worse with each
passing minute. He thought about other children who were likely
playing on the beach or having fun. James wished he could go back to
the sea where he used to play with his parents. The memories made
him feel even more alone, and he began to cry. He couldn’t hold back
his tears.
James gathered up the courage to ask his aunts if they could go to the
beach just for one day. Instead of agreeing, they got angry. Aunt
Spiker threatened to beat him later, and Aunt Sponge supported the
idea. James became scared and ran to the end of the garden, hiding
behind the bushes.
This chapter shows how cruel and selfish James's aunts are. James's
sadness grows, and he feels trapped and hopeless. The readers feel
more sympathy for James, and they begin to hope for some kind of
magical change or rescue that could take him away from his miserable
life.
Chapter 3
While James was crying behind the laurel bushes, something
unexpected happened. He heard a rustling noise and looked up to see
a strange old man standing in front of him. The man wore a green suit,
had a large bald head, black whiskers, and twinkling eyes. He looked a
little scary, but he spoke kindly and told James not to be afraid.
5
The old man said he knew how unhappy James was and that he had
something magical to give him. He pulled a small white paper bag out
of his pocket. Inside the bag were thousands of tiny green objects that
sparkled and moved as if they were alive. They made a faint
whispering sound, like little voices. James was very surprised.
The old man explained that these green things were full of powerful
magic. They were made from special ingredients like the tongue of a
crocodile, monkey's fingers, and other magical parts, all boiled
together in a witch’s skull. He said the green things had the power to
completely change James’s life for the better. He told James to mix
them with water, add ten hairs from his own head, and drink the
mixture fast. Then the magic would begin to work.
The old man warned James not to drop them and not to let them touch
anything else, because the first thing they touched would receive the
magic. James listened carefully, full of hope. The man handed James
the bag and then suddenly disappeared into the bushes as
mysteriously as he had arrived.
This chapter brings hope into James’s sad life. For the first time, James
has something magical and special that might take him away from his
pain. It makes readers feel excited and curious about what will happen
next. The story is clearly taking a turn toward something magical and
adventurous.
Chapter 4
James stood holding the magical paper bag filled with tiny green
crystals, feeling a mix of hope and excitement. For the first time in
years, he felt that something good might happen. The strange old man
had just told him how powerful the green things were. They had the
ability to completely change James’s life. All he had to do was follow
the instructions carefully.
The old man had told James to pour the green things into a jug of
water, add ten hairs from his head, and then drink the whole mixture
quickly. The magic would begin to work right away. James would never
be miserable or lonely again. He would become strong, happy, and full
6
of energy. Everything would change.
The old man had also warned James to be very careful. If he dropped
the green things or let them touch anything else, the magic would go
into that object instead of James. That meant if the crystals touched a
bug, a plant, or even a rock, the magic would change that thing
instead of helping James. James remembered these instructions
clearly.
As the old man disappeared into the bushes, James stood there alone.
He looked down at the glowing green things in the bag. They moved
slightly, making a soft rustling noise, almost as if they were whispering
to each other. It was both amazing and a little bit scary.
This chapter is short but very important. It shows that James now has
the power to change his life, but he has to be careful. The story
creates suspense and makes the reader wonder if James will be able to
use the magic correctly. Will he get the happy life he dreams of? Or
will something go wrong? The next chapter will reveal what happens
when James tries to use the magic.
Chapter 5
Excited and nervous, James quickly ran back toward the house,
holding the magical bag tightly. He wanted to mix the green crystals
with water just as the old man had told him. He was in a hurry because
he didn’t want his aunts to see him. He also wanted to start his new
and better life as soon as possible.
But as James ran through the dry garden, he slipped and fell near the
old peach tree. The bag flew from his hand, landed on the ground, and
burst open. The tiny green crystals scattered across the soil. James
gasped and tried to grab them, but it was too late. The green things
quickly sank into the ground and disappeared. No matter how hard
James tried, he couldn’t stop them.
He felt heartbroken. His big chance for a better life was gone. He
7
remembered the old man’s warning—the magic would go into the first
thing the crystals touched. Now they had touched the soil. What would
happen? Would the magic enter the peach tree’s roots? Would it go
into an earthworm or an insect in the ground?
Before he could think more, he heard his aunts calling. They yelled at
him for being lazy and told him to get back to work.
James returned to his chores, feeling hopeless and defeated. All the
excitement and hope he had felt just moments ago was gone. Now he
believed his dream of happiness had slipped away forever.
This chapter is very emotional. It shows how quickly hope can
disappear. James had a magical solution, but by accident, he lost it.
However, it also makes the reader curious. If the magic went into the
ground, maybe something unexpected will still happen. This chapter
builds suspense and prepares us for something magical that is about
to take place.
Chapter 6
Just as James was feeling sad and hopeless, something very strange
happened in the garden. Aunt Spiker suddenly called out to Aunt
Sponge, asking her to come and look at the peach tree. Something
unusual was happening. A peach had appeared on the tree!
This was shocking because the old peach tree had never grown any
fruit. For many years, it had just stood there dry and bare. Aunt
Sponge didn’t believe it at first, but when she looked closely, she saw
the peach too. James and his aunts were amazed. No one understood
how it was possible. Then, something even more incredible happened
—the peach started growing bigger!
At first, it was the size of a normal peach, then it grew as big as a
melon. But it didn’t stop there. It continued to grow quickly. The aunts
and James stood in silence, watching it get bigger and bigger right
before their eyes. It was a magical moment.
Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker were surprised but also greedy. They
told James to climb the tree and pick the peach, thinking they could
eat it. But Aunt Spiker stopped him when she noticed the peach
getting even larger. They all stayed and watched it grow. No one had
ever seen anything like this before.
8
This chapter brings back the excitement. The magic hadn’t been lost
after all. Even though James didn’t drink the mixture, the green things
had entered the tree’s roots and caused something magical to happen.
The peach was now magical and mysterious. Readers are left
wondering just how big it will get and what kind of adventure it will
lead to. This chapter marks the beginning of something new and
wonderful in the story.
Chapter 7
The peach continued to grow bigger and bigger, and James, Aunt
Sponge, and Aunt Spiker all stared at it in amazement. The peach was
now as big as a pumpkin, and it was still growing. It became the size of
a car, then even larger. It looked like a giant golden-orange ball
hanging from the peach tree.
The branch that held the peach bent lower and lower under the heavy
weight. The aunts thought it might break, but it didn’t. The tree held
the peach even as it touched the ground. The aunts were shocked and
didn’t know what to do. At first, they were excited because they had
never seen anything so big and beautiful. But soon, they began to
think about how they could use the peach to make money.
James quietly watched the peach. He thought it was the most beautiful
thing he had ever seen. He was full of wonder. But his aunts didn’t let
him enjoy the moment. They told him to stay away and be quiet.
James stayed near the garden wall, just watching the peach and
thinking.
The aunts started planning. They realized that people would want to
come and see such a giant peach. They talked about charging money
9
and making themselves rich. Their greedy minds were already
working. But James didn’t care about money. He just felt that
something magical and amazing was happening, and it filled him with
quiet hope.
This chapter continues to build excitement. The magic has clearly
worked, and something wonderful has begun. The peach is not just a
fruit—it is a symbol of change and adventure. Readers feel that
James’s life is about to take a new turn. This chapter makes everyone
curious about what will happen next.
Chapter 8
In Chapter 8, something amazing happens – a giant peach grows in
Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker’s garden, and it becomes as big as a
house! Soon, the news spreads across the countryside, and many
people from different places come to see this strange fruit. People are
very curious and excited. To control the crowd and earn money, Aunt
Sponge and Aunt Spiker call carpenters and have a strong fence built
around the peach. They then start selling tickets to visitors who want
to see the peach up close. The two greedy aunts even charge extra
money from those who bring cameras. They are thrilled because
money is pouring into their pockets. While all this is going on outside,
James is locked in his room. He wants to go out and see the other
children or help his aunts, but they refuse. They think he will just get in
the way. Poor James watches everything from his window. He feels sad
and lonely. Later that evening, when all the visitors go home, the
aunts finally let James out, but only to clean up all the garbage left by
the crowd. He has not eaten anything the whole day and asks for food,
but his aunts shout at him and tell him they are too busy counting
money. They kick him out of the house and make him pick up banana
peels, orange skins, and pieces of paper in the dark.
10
This chapter shows how selfish and greedy Aunt Sponge and Aunt
Spiker are. They only care about money and treat James very badly.
James is alone, hungry, and tired, but he has no choice. The chapter
makes the reader feel sad for James and wonders what will happen
next.
Chapter 9
Chapter 9 begins with James feeling hungry and scared. He is alone in
the garden at night because his aunts forced him outside to clean up
the mess. The night is quiet, and everything looks spooky in the
moonlight. Shadows are long and scary, and James feels nervous, just
like any small child would when left alone in the dark. He looks at the
giant peach and sees how shiny and beautiful it looks in the moonlight.
It looks like a huge silver ball sitting in the grass.
Even though he is scared, James starts to feel a little excited.
Something inside him tells him that something magical is about to
happen. He can feel it. Without even thinking much, James walks
slowly toward the peach. It feels like he is being pulled by some
invisible force. He climbs over the fence his aunts had built and stands
close to the peach. He touches it with his finger and feels its soft,
warm skin. It feels like touching the fur of a baby animal. Then, James
even rubs his cheek against the peach because it feels so nice.
While doing this, James sees something surprising – a small hole in the
side of the peach, near the ground. The hole is not very big, but it is
big enough for him to notice. This discovery makes James even more
curious. The way the peach shines and the way he feels around it
make everything seem magical. James doesn’t yet know what’s inside,
but the chapter ends with him standing next to the hole, feeling that
something wonderful and strange is going to happen very soon.
11
Chapter 10
In Chapter 10, James decides to explore the hole in the peach. It’s not
just a hole – it’s a tunnel! He gets down on his hands and knees and
begins to crawl inside. The tunnel is dark, wet, and sticky. The walls
are soft with peach flesh, and juice is dripping everywhere. It smells
sweet and strange at the same time. James can feel the peach juice on
his hands and knees, and he even opens his mouth to taste some of it.
It tastes delicious!
As he moves forward, he realizes that the tunnel is going uphill. It
seems like it is leading to the center of the peach. James keeps
crawling and, every few steps, he takes little bites of the juicy peach
around him. He is still hungry and the fruit is refreshing. The journey
through the tunnel feels like an adventure. The more he crawls, the
more excited he feels.
Then suddenly, James bumps his head into something hard. It feels
like wood. He touches it and realizes it is the stone at the center of the
peach – the big pit. But something is strange – there is a small door in
the stone. James pushes the door, and it opens! He crawls through the
door and enters a new space. Before he can look around properly, he
hears voices.
Someone says, “Look who’s here!” and another voice adds, “We’ve
been waiting for you!” James is shocked and scared. His face turns
white, and his knees shake. He wants to run back, but when he turns
around, the door he came through is gone! There is only a solid wall
behind him now. This moment is full of mystery and suspense. James
is now inside the heart of the peach, and something very unusual is
about to begin.
12
Chapter 11
Chapter 11 brings a big surprise. James looks around and sees several
very large creatures. At first, he cannot believe his eyes. Are they
insects? But they are the size of people – even larger than him! Sitting
on chairs and sofas are a huge Green Grasshopper, a giant Spider, a
big Ladybug with nine black spots, a long Centipede, a fat Earthworm,
and a Silkworm who is asleep in the corner.
These insects are all watching James very closely. James is very
scared. He thinks they might want to eat him, especially when they
start saying things like “I’m hungry!” and “I’m famished!” The Spider
even licks her lips. Poor James is backed against the wall, shivering
with fear. He doesn’t understand what is going on and is too scared to
speak.
Then, something surprising happens. The insects start laughing! The
Ladybug says, “Oh no! He thinks we want to eat him!” and everyone
bursts out laughing. They tell James not to be afraid. They would never
hurt him. In fact, they say that he is now one of them – part of their
group.
The Centipede asks James to help him remove his many boots. It’s a
funny moment. This chapter is important because it shows how James
starts to make new friends. These insects may look scary, but they are
kind and funny. It is the beginning of a new adventure for James,
where he is no longer alone. Now, he is part of a magical world inside
the peach.
Chapter 12
In Chapter 12, James begins to feel more comfortable with his new
insect friends. The Centipede thanks him for helping remove his boots,
13
and James notices that the Centipede has many, many legs. The
Centipede proudly says he has one hundred legs, but the Earthworm
disagrees and says he only has forty-two. Earthworm tells James that
the Centipede is always lying about how many legs he has. This makes
the insects start to joke and argue playfully.
The Earthworm and the Centipede argue about which is better –
having many legs or having none. Earthworm says it is amazing to be
able to move without any legs, while the Centipede makes fun of him
for just slithering. Their talk makes everyone laugh.
James watches them and feels something new – he is happy.
These insects are silly and loud, but they are friendly. They are not
mean like his aunts.
Then, the conversation turns to how the insects became so big. The
Centipede begins to tell a story about finding little green things in the
soil under the peach tree. James gets excited because he remembers
the same green things. One by one, the insects say they swallowed
some. That is what caused them to grow big and be able to talk.
James feels amazed. All of them were changed by the same magical
green things he saw before. The chapter ends with everyone getting
ready to sleep. The Old Green Grasshopper asks Miss Spider to make
the beds. James realizes that, for the first time, he is surrounded by
friends who like him. He is not scared anymore.
Chapter 13
James and his new insect friends are getting ready to sleep inside the
giant peach. Miss Spider kindly makes soft and silky hammocks for
everyone using her special thread. The creatures settle into their beds
one by one. James is surprised and happy to sleep in such a soft place,
much better than the hard floors he had at his aunts’ house.
14
However, Centipede causes a little trouble. He insists that James
remove all his many boots—twenty-one pairs in total! It takes James
nearly two hours to finish the task because the boots are tightly
knotted.
After James finally finishes, the Centipede falls asleep without even
helping. James, tired but content, climbs into his hammock. Everything
feels calm. But then Centipede shouts for the light to be turned off.
James looks around and sees that everyone else is fast asleep.
Finally, James realizes that the light is coming from the Glow-worm
hanging upside down from the ceiling. Her tail glows like a lamp,
lighting up the whole room. Centipede throws a boot at her to turn it
off. She wakes up, annoyed, and then finally switches off her glowing
light.
Now in darkness, James listens to the peaceful sounds of everyone
sleeping. He thinks about his new friends and how nice they really are.
Even though they look strange, they are kind and helpful. He whispers
good night to each one but falls asleep before finishing the list.
Chapter 14
James is suddenly woken up by loud shouts. Everyone is excited
because the peach is finally about to move! The creatures have been
living on a lonely hilltop, but now it’s time to go on an adventure.
The Ladybug explains that the peach has been stuck to the tree by its
stem. But now, the Centipede is cutting through the stem using his
15
sharp jaws. The garden is on a slope, so once the stem breaks, the
peach will roll away on its own.
James is a little nervous but ready. The Ladybug even offers to protect
him with her wing. Just then, the Centipede pops his head down and
happily announces that he has finished cutting.
The peach begins to move.
Everyone cheers and celebrates as the peach rolls away from the hill.
They imagine all the amazing places they might see—strange animals,
magical lands, and wild adventures.
The Centipede sings a silly song about bizarre creatures like the Pink-
Spotted Scrunch and a hen whose eggs explode. Everyone laughs and
feels excited. They are glad to be leaving behind the mean aunts,
Spiker and Sponge.
The peach starts moving slowly but then picks up speed. Furniture and
the creatures slide across the floor as it tilts. The adventure has truly
begun, and no one knows where it will take them.
Chapter 15
Outside in the garden, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are standing near
the giant peach. They are holding tickets and getting ready to charge
people money to see it. A crowd is already climbing up the hill to get a
look.
Aunt Sponge asks about James and wonders why he didn’t come home
last night. Aunt Spiker cruelly guesses that he might have fallen and
broken his leg—or even
his neck— and she doesn’t seem to care.
Suddenly, they hear a loud crashing sound. It's the giant peach! It has
16
broken free from the tree and smashed through the garden fence. It's
rolling straight toward them!
Both aunts panic and start screaming. They push and trip over each
other as they try to run away. Aunt Sponge falls first, and Aunt Spiker
trips over her. They both lie on the ground, struggling to get up.
But before they can move, the peach rolls right over them. There is a
loud crunch—and then silence. The peach rolls on, leaving Aunt Spiker
and Aunt Sponge flattened on the ground, completely lifeless—like
paper dolls.
This moment is shocking but also a turning point. James is now free
from his cruel aunts. The peach continues rolling, beginning a strange
and exciting journey.
Chapter 16
The giant peach has now rolled off the hill and is racing through the
countryside. It moves faster and faster, crashing through everything in
its path.
People who were coming to see the peach run away screaming as it
rushes past. It rolls over a telegraph pole and crushes two parked cars.
Then it speeds across fields, breaking fences and scaring cows, sheep,
horses, and pigs.
Animals are running in every direction. The peach doesn’t stop.
It smashes through a village and even crashes through a chocolate
factory. Chocolate starts flooding the streets, and children laugh and
play in it. Some even try to swim in the sweet, sticky mess.
17
But the peach keeps going, knocking over barns, houses, and anything
else in its way. It causes chaos everywhere.
James and his insect friends are still inside the peach. They can feel it
bouncing and rolling wildly. No one knows when or where it will stop.
Finally, the peach reaches the edge of a cliff. It flies off the land and
into the air. For a moment, it seems frozen in the sky. Then it drops
with a huge splash into the ocean!
At first, it sinks like a stone, but then it rises again and floats.
The giant peach is now floating calmly on the sea like a big boat.
James’s adventure is no longer on land—it has now moved to the
ocean.
Chapter 17
Inside the peach, everything is a mess. James and all the creatures are
lying on the floor, bruised and tangled up. The wild ride from the hill to
the sea was horrible. They were thrown around like toys inside a box.
Furniture, shoes, and even the insects were flying everywhere. James
was bumped into the ceiling, the walls, and even into the other
creatures.
The Glow-worm’s light went out, so it was dark the whole time.
Everyone was screaming and shouting as they crashed into each
other. James tried to hold onto something, but it turned out to be one
of Centipede’s legs! Poor Earthworm was the most scared—he kept
wrapping himself tightly around James and wouldn't let go.
Finally, the peach stops moving. Everything becomes quiet. The
creatures slowly begin to untangle themselves. They are all sore and
tired but glad it’s over.
The Centipede demands light, and the Glow-worm works hard to glow
again. Slowly, a greenish light fills the room so they can see.
Everyone is confused. Where are they? The Earthworm guesses they
are at the bottom of a coal mine. The Ladybug hopes they are in a
beautiful land. James thinks maybe they are near the sea.
18
Then someone notices they are bobbing up and down. Could they be
floating? They decide to find out. Miss Spider begins weaving a rope-
ladder so they can climb to the top of the peach and look outside.
After much effort—and after putting all of Centipede’s 42 boots back
on—they are finally ready. Excited and nervous, they climb up to the
top of the peach to discover what kind of place they’ve ended up in.
Chapter 18
When they reach the top of the peach, the bright sunlight hits their
eyes. The creatures look around—and are shocked. There is no land
anywhere. They are floating in the middle of the sea!
Waves splash gently against the peach, and a strong wind pushes
them farther away. No one can understand how they ended up so far
from land. They are worried and scared. Where is England? Where are
the hills and trees?
The Old-Green-Grasshopper tries to stay calm. But the Earthworm
begins to panic. He says they are going to die—if not from drowning,
then from starvation. He reminds everyone that they haven’t eaten
anything since yesterday.
This makes everyone realize how hungry they are. The Earthworm
says they’ll die slowly from hunger. The Centipede agrees. But James
has a great idea.
He tells them they are sitting on a giant piece of food—the peach!
There’s enough juicy fruit to last them for weeks.
At first, the Earthworm complains that eating the peach might make it
sink. But James explains that it's so big that eating a little won’t hurt.
They all agree and get excited.
Everyone begins scooping out chunks of sweet peach flesh and eating
happily. The Ladybug, Miss Spider, and others are amazed. They say
they’ve never tasted anything so delicious.
Centipede even sings a silly song about all the weird things he’s eaten
in his life, saying that nothing compares to the taste of the peach.
Everyone starts to feel happy again. The sky is blue, the peach is
19
floating like a golden boat, and their stomachs are full. For the
moment, all their fears are gone.
Chapter 19
Just as everyone finishes eating and is feeling happy, the Centipede
spots something in the water. He points out a strange black shape
moving through the sea. Then they notice more of them. The Ladybug,
Miss Spider, and others look closely and realize there are many of
these shapes surrounding the peach.
The Earthworm becomes very scared. He is sure they are sharks and
says they have come to eat the peach—and them!
At first, the others try to stay calm. The Centipede says it’s nonsense
and that there’s no danger if they stay on top of the peach. But then,
one shark swims right up to the peach. It stares at them with cold eyes
and then tries to bite the peach!
Suddenly, all the other sharks start attacking too. They bang into the
peach, splash water everywhere, and use their sharp teeth to bite into
the fruit. The creatures on top of the peach panic. Miss Spider and the
Ladybug start to cry out. Earthworm wails, saying he’ll be the first to
be eaten because he’s soft and has no bones.
Everyone turns to James, begging him to come up with a plan. They
believe he’s smart and can save them.
James begins to think. The sharks are destroying the peach. If they eat
too much of it, there will be nothing left to float on. Everyone looks at
James with hope in their eyes, waiting for him to come up with an idea
before it’s too late.
20
Chapter 20
James tells the others that he has an idea—but it might not work. He
says they need hundreds of yards of strong string. At first, he’s sad
because he thinks they don’t have any. But then the Old-Green-
Grasshopper reminds him that they do have string: Miss Spider and
the Silkworm can make it!
Miss Spider proudly says she can spin strong threads, even patterns.
The Silkworm, who is always asleep, can be woken up to help.
Together, they can spin as much string as needed, and quickly too.
Everyone is curious. Why does James need string?
James tells them his plan: he will use the string to tie the peach to
seagulls flying above them. The seagulls will lift the peach out of the
water and save them from the sharks!
At first, the insects think James is joking. The Earthworm says it’s a
crazy idea. The Centipede laughs and asks how James will tie a string
to a bird’s neck. James says he will use bait—and that bait is the
Earthworm.
The Earthworm becomes very upset. He refuses to be used as bird
bait. But the others try to calm him down and explain that it’s for a
good cause. Miss Spider and the Centipede even say his name will be
remembered and honored if he helps.
James says the seagulls won’t eat the Earthworm. They just need him
to attract the birds so James can catch them with loops of string and
tie them to the peach.
It’s a bold and creative idea—but will it work?
