Try to figure out the sequence of events of the story of Emily, by listing all of the
events that were told by the narrator. For example, where does the story begin? --With
Emily as a young girl who lives with her overbearing father. Then he died. What is the
last scene of the story? --When the townspeople open the upstairs room. Now try to fill
in all of the middle scenes.

● The story begins at Miss Emily’s funeral and all the townspeople attend. People
have yet to see her for years but still manage to attend. Emily fails to pay the taxes
on her once luxurious home due to the previous mayor suspending them after her
father died. The alderman attempts to make her pay but fails.
● The story skips thirty years prior when the townspeople notice a weird smell. They
spread lime around the house at night while Emily is asleep. She fails to give her
fathers body up for 3 days.
● Emily becomes sick and starts dating Homer. He is from up North and came to
pave sidewalks. The townspeople have always looked at the Griersons as superior
so dating Homer wasn’t the best idea to them.
● She buys arsenic one day and nosey townspeople believe she may commit
suicude. The minister comes to speak with Emily but doesn’t return and doesn’t
say why.
● It appears Emily and Homers relationship is going good until one day he
disappears.
● Eventually Emily dies and her house is open at her funeral. Emily had stop using
her upstairs floor but it was discovered that Homer's body had been there for a
while in a bed Emily slept in as well and she used it for wedding stuff.
