VI. Concepts Notes with formative assessment.
Let’s us explore more! There many computer troubles we can encounter and
sometimes we find it disappointing. We were unable to save our file because the
1
computer suddenly stopped. Below are other computer troubles we may encounter.
Come join me in exploring the solutions of these computer problems.
WHAT TO KNOW
1. An application is frozen (application stopped)
Sometimes an application may become stuck, or frozen. When this happens,
you won't be able to close the window or click any buttons within the application.
Solutions:
a. Force quit the application- On a PC, you can press (and hold) Ctrl+Alt+Delete
(the Control, Alt, and Delete keys) on your keyboard to open the Task
Manager. On a Mac, press and hold Command+Option+Esc. You can then
select the unresponsive application and click End task (or Force Quit on a
Mac) to close it.
Figure 1: Task Manager
b. Restart the computer- If you are unable to force quit an application, restarting
your computer will close all open apps.
2. The mouse or keyboard has stopped working
Causes:
a. Defective keyboard or mouse
b. Battery has no charge (wireless keyboard or mouse)
2
Solutions:
a. If you're using a wired mouse or keyboard, make sure it's correctly plugged
into the computer.
b. If you're using a wireless mouse or keyboard, make sure it's turned on and
that its batteries are charged.
c. Try replacing mouse with another mouse or keyboard, if it works then try to
replace it, maybe it is already defective.
Figure 2: Check for properly
plugged mouse or keyboard
3. PC is on but HDD does not spin up
Causes:
a. Faulty power connector
b. Faulty Data cables ( IDE cable or SATA cable)
Solutions:
a. Check power connector to HDD is properly connected (interchange with the
other power connector to validate).
Figure 3: Check for properly plugged power connectors
or data cables
3
b. Check IDE ribbon cable or SATA cable is correctly connected to both
Motherboard and HDD (try to connect other cable).
c. If still the drive is not spinning up or detected, this may indicate a faulty Hard
Drive (replacement of the drive is the only remedy).
4. PC is on but the CPU fans do not spin
The CPU fan is usually supplied with a 3V or 5V from the PSU (power supply
unit) on laptops and 12V on desktops. The port that the fan connects onto the
motherboard is known as the fan header. If your CPU fan does not spin, the issue
could be anywhere from the fan, the motherboard, to the power supply unit. The fan
can get clogged with dust and lint hence preventing it from spinning.
Causes:
a. Defective CPU fan
b. Defective CPU fan power connector
c. Dirty or foreign materials stuck on the fan blade.
Solutions:
a. Disconnect the power immediately to prevent damage to the CPU from
overheating .
b. Check fan power cables are correctly connected to the relevant power
connector (in most cases, a motherboard FAN connector or one of the PSU
power connectors).
c. Disconnect the power and carefully spin the fan blades with a finger. If there is
any resistance to this movement, this may indicate a faulty fan unit.
d. Clean/ free the fan blade from foreign objects or dirt.
5. On boot up, the monitor shows corrupted display
Causes:
a. Not properly connected hardware component.
b. Defective Video card
4
Solutions:
a. Check seating of CPU, RAM, Video card, sound card etc. If necessary,
remove and refit these components
Figure 4: Reseat cards such as RAM, Video Card or any other adapter cards.
b. This may indicate a faulty Motherboard or Video card (replacement is the only
remedy).
6. On boot up, display shows incorrect RAM total
Causes:
a. Not properly connected RAM/ Poor contact of the pins
b. Defective RAM card
Solutions:
a. Check correct seating of Memory Modules in slots
b. In cases of two or more modules, this may indicate a faulty module (Try to
remove one by one the modules and power the computer to figure out the
defective module.
Figure 5: Re-seat RAM
5
c. This may indicate a faulty/old motherboard ( last resort)
Searching the web for a solution
If you still haven't found a solution to your problem, you may need to ask
someone else for help. Try searching the web for the problem that you're having, as
other people may have had similar problems. Also, if you have a friend or family
member who knows a lot about computers, they may be able to help you. Keep in
mind that most computer problems have simple solutions, although it may take some
time to find them.
For very difficult problems, a more drastic solution may be required, such as
reformatting your hard drive, reinstalling programs, or reinstalling your operating
system. If you're not a computer expert, it's possible that you could make the
situation worse, so it's best to consult a professional if you think a drastic solution is
needed.
