Key Points
• In past 24 hours, moderate rainfall occurred at isolated places and thunderstorm associated with gusty wind
and lightning occurred over few places of North and Central Chhattisgarh.
• Moderate to severe thunderstorm associated with severe lightning likely over North and Central
Chhattisgarh for next 3 days.
• Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places of North Chhattisgarh on 17th and 18th June.
• Conditions are favourable for further advancement of Southwest monsoon over some more parts of
Chhattisgarh during next 24 hours.

Synoptic System:

• The Northern Limit of Monsoon passes through Veraval, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Khargone, Amravati,
Durg, Bargarh, Chandbali, Sandhead Island and Balurghat.
• Conditions are favourable for further advancement of Southwest monsoon over some more parts of
Chhattisgarh during next 24 hours.
• The cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood persists and now seen
between 1.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level tilting Southwestwards with height.
• The trough from East Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh across Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand & Gangetic
West Bengal extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height has
become less marked.
Weather Summary:
In past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall occurred at isolated places over South and central Chhattisgarh.
The maximum temperature was above normal in Sarguja division, appreciably above normal in Durg division
and above normal in rest of the divisions of Chhattisgarh.
The highest maximum temperature of 39.0°C was recorded in Rajnandgaon and the lowest minimum temperature
of 21.0°C was recorded in Rajnandgaon.

IMPACT AND NECESSARY ACTION:

THUNDERSTORMS WITH LIGHTNING AND HAIL:

• When sound of thunder is heard, go indoors to a safe shelter immediately. Avoid staying near metal
structures and constructions with metal sheeting. Safe shelters include pukka home, pukka building, or
hard top vehicles with the windows rolled up.
• If no shelter is available, immediately get into the crouch position.
• There is a possibility of tin sheets used on kaccha houses to fly.
• Avoid taking shelter under trees.
• Do not use electric / electronic appliances.
• Keep away from all utility lines and objects that conduct electricity.
• Shift the harvested crops in agricultural fields to safe storage.
• Install anti hail nets over horticultural and vegetable crop fields to minimize the effect of hail storm.

IMPACT OF HEAVY RAINFALL: -

• Localized landslides/mudslides.

• Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to flooding.

• Flooding may occur in river catchment areas.

• Localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low lying areas and closure

of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above region.

• Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall.

• Traffic disruption in major cities due to waterlogging on roads, increasing

travel time.

• Minor damage to unpaved roads.

Possibility of damage to vulnerable structures.

• Increased slipperiness on roads.

• Waterlogging on roads leads to traffic disruption in major cities, increasing

travel time.

• Reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall. Minor damage to crops.
