Depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a common and serious mental health

condition that negatively affects how you feel, think, and act. It is characterized by persistent
feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, and can lead to a
variety of emotional and physical problems. Depression can decrease a person's ability to
function at work and at home.

Symptoms of Depression

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), during a depressive episode, a person
experiences a depressed mood (feeling sad, irritable, empty) or a loss of pleasure or interest in
activities for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. Other symptoms may
include:

medical conditions, substance use disorders, and significant life changes.

and understanding.
