َ
Do(es) not ‫َّل‬
The word ‫ َّل‬is used to convey negation in Arabic, but only when
it comes to present verbs. It is important to know that English
has many different ways to convey negations in the present tenses
(not only do not/ does not), which could be seen in the following
examples:

ُ ُۡ ََ ُ ُۡ ‫ا‬
ٖ‫َّل يس ِمن وَّل يغ ِِن مِن جوع‬
ٗ َ َٰ َ َ ُ َ ۡ َ ‫ا‬
That neither nourishes, nor satisfies hunger.

١١ ‫َّل تسمع فِيها لغِية‬

Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.

Not (present/ past) ‫َما‬

The Arabic word ‫ ما‬is possibly one of the most flexible words in
Arabic, which could be used with different meanings. There is an
entire chapter later in this book which will be dedicated to this
word only. One of the reasons why we consider it to be flexible is
that we use it to negate verbs in present and also past, unlike ‫َّل‬
which is mostly used with present verbs.

The major use of the Arabic word ‫ لم‬is past negation. This of
course includes different types past tenses in English; so not just
‘did not’. It could also be used as ‘have not’, ‘had not’ and ‘would
not’. In other words, as long as it has to do with the past tense, it
can be used.

List 3-7 – Discussion
َۡ
‫ هل‬/ ‫أ‬
Yes/ no Questions
The hamza (- ‫ ) أ‬can be used as a prefix that is added to the
beginning of Arabic words to form a yes-no question. The
subject of that sentence is then determined by the word to
which ‫ أ‬is attached. The hamza (- ‫ ) أ‬can also appear as only (‫)ء‬
at the beginning of words that already start with a hamza ( ‫) أ‬.
The word ‫هل‬, on the other hand, is a stand-alone word which
gives the same meaning and has the same function. The
translation of both of these words to English depends on the
tense of the sentence. Therefore, you will see it translated at ‘is
this ..’ , ‘Do they ..’ , ‘will they ..’ and so on.

َٰ َ ‫ون َم‬ ‫فسينغِضون إَِلك رءوسهم ويقول‬
Then they will nod their heads at you, and say, “When will it be?”

َ
Where...? َ‫أ ۡين‬
It is important to mention that the word ‫ أين‬can be attached to
‫ ما‬forming ‫أينما‬, but when this happens, the word ‫ أين‬will lose
its ability to form questions, so be sure that it is not attached to
anything else so that it would be understood as a question
word. The word ‫ أينما‬will be discussed in the final chapter of
this book along with other combinations that go with the word
‫ما‬.

َ ُ ُ َۡ ۡ ُ ُ َ ‫ۡ ََُ ُ َۡ َ ُ ََٓ َ ا‬
٦٢ ‫َو َي ۡو َم ُي َنادِي ِهم فيقول أين ِشَكءِي ٱَّلِين كنتم تزعمون‬

ُ َ
ِۚ ‫ۡرض ف‬ِ ‫قل ِسيوا ِِف ٱۡل‬
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation.

َ
How many/ much? ‫ك ۡم‬
In English, we differentiate between countable and
uncountable nouns. This is not the case when it comes to
Arabic; therefore, the word ‫ كم‬will be used when asking about
both countable and uncountable nouns.

ۡ َ ِ ۡ َ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ْۡ ََ ََۡ
‫ألم يروا كم أهلكنا مِن قبل ِ ِهم مِن قر ٖن‬
َ ۡ ََ
Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them?
َٗ َ ۡ َ َ ََۡ َ ۡ َ
‫وكم قصمنا مِن قريةٖ َكنت ظال ِمة‬
How many a guilty town have We crushed,

Which? ُّ‫أَي‬
In English, when you are trying to make a choice, we use
‘which’ if the number of choices is limited, while we use ‘what’
if the number is unlimited or unknown. However, in Arabic,
َ
the word ‫ أ ُّي‬covers both of these meanings, which means
that this differentiation does not exist in Arabic. That is why,
َ
the word ‫ أ ُّي‬can be translated to either ‘what’ or ‘which’
depending on the context of the aya in English.
