Coorg or Kodagu is the smallest district of Karnataka. It is situated midway between Mysore and
the coastal town of Mangalore. It is famous for coffee, evergreen forest and spices. Visitors visit
this area from September to March. They are possibly Greeks or Arabs. One story says that
they are the descendants of Alexander army, another says that they are relatives of Kodavus of
Arab.

Answer:
The fiercely independent people of Coorg are descendents of Greeks or Arabs. A section of
Alexander’s army moved South along the coast and settled here only when they were unable to
return to their country. These people married among the locals. This is the story about the
descent of Kodavu people.

Answer:
The Coorgi tradition of courage and bravery has been recognised by awarding the Coorg
Regiment with the most number of gallantry awards. Besides, the Coorgis are the only Indians
allowed to carry firearms without a licence.

Answer:
The wildlife of Coorg consists of animals like macaques, langurs, squirrels, loris and elephants.
The birds spotted in Coorg are kingfishers. Mahseer is a famous fish of this area.
