Introduction:
As part of my academic and other responsibilities, I carried out a community service project that was aiming at maintaining good sanitation in our village as well as developing my
personal and professional skills. In this report, I will outline the activities carried out, lessons, challenges, possible solutions as well as impacts of the service on both the community
and me
Activities performed:
During my time with Boston well wishers association, I participated in variety of tasks including;
Food supply
Participating in community outreach programs where we visited kulekana village and did some voluntary work
Free public sensitisation educating people about the importance of community work
We also visited Vin medical clinic and provided hope to patients together with financial support
Skills developed:
Through this experience, I developed the following skills;
Communication: I improved my ability to communicate with people where by I had to talk nicely to the patients at Vin medical clinic
Team work: Through working with other members of the association, I developed the skill of work together as a team and the importance of working as a team
Listening skills: I also developed a listening skill by hearing and listening to different people who had different issues most especially at Vin medical clinic
Problem solving skill: Through this experience, I got a skill of problem solving where by different people were telling us their problems and as a member of the
organization was required to solve some problems in kulekana village
Time management skills: During our walk to walk activities,we were required to always reach in time not on time and through this experience, I improved on my time
management skill as late comers were always asked to pay fines towards their late coming
Observation skill: I also gained an observation skill as I had to observe some of our subjects and know what they are going through like at Vin medical clinic I observed
some of the patients since they couldn't speak on their own
Challenges faced:
I didn't face alot of challenges due to the fact that I was liking what I was doing but a few of them include the following;
Language barrier: This was because am a munyankole and I carried out my community service in baganda people which made communication difficult at times most
especially when with elders who don't try English
Secondly, I also faced a problem of limited resources to support our work in terms of transport where by we were walking long distances to make our plans come true
Solutions to challenges:
I address the above problems by seeking guidance from senior volunteers and other big organizations like the Red cross to intervene and provide resources to members of Boston
well wishers association like vehicles for the smooth running of their aims and future prospects
Effects of the community service:
This community service has been both humbling and enlightening. It helped me understand the importance of working together as a team. It also reinforced my belief in social
responsibility and the role I can play as a student to contribute meaningfully to a society.
Conclusion:
I am grateful for the opportunity and intend to remain involved in volunteer activities even beyond my academic obligations as I registered my permanent membership in Boston
