What is a thesis statement?
A thesis statement expresses main idea. A thesis statement tells the reader what
the paper is about and helps guide the writer and keep his arguments or ideas
focused. Hence, a thesis paper is not a topic sentence.
EXAMPLE:

Thesis statement 1: Parents should not decide on the college course of their
children.
Thesis statement 2: Parents should deicde on the college course of their children.
2. Should school uniforms be required in school?
Thesis stamen 1: School uniforms should be required in school.
Thesis statement 2: School uniforms should not be required in school.
A topic sentence on the other hand is different from the thesis statement. The
thesis paper tells what the entire paper is about. It is used to define the purpose of
the paper, to argue or to state a point. While the topic sentence shows only what the
paragraph is about. It is sometimes called the focus sentence in the paragraph.
