PRAYER AND FASTING

Versículo clave:1 Tesalonicenses 5:17, 1 Timoteo 2:1-4

Introduction: Prayer is the means through which we communicate with God. Prayer is to our
spirit like oxygen for our body. We cannot live without praying! A Christian who does not pray is
"suffocating" his spirit, and it won't be long before his spirit dies; however, a believer who
dedicating daily time to prayer is strengthening your spirit and filling it with the life of God.

The sentence does not consist of big and eloquent words, but of the sincere expression of our thoughts.
your feelings with God, just as a child does with his father or mother. It is the opportunity to share
with God our problems, doubts, projects, fears, and needs. Through prayer we can know
to God in a personal way, since God desires to have an intimate relationship with us, His children.

Acts 1:14 says, "all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication"! 4 very important words! To persevere,
unanimous, prayer and supplication. The disciples prayed persistently for 10 days until the Spirit was
poured out upon them (Acts 2:1-4). The key is in perseverance and fervor. Prayer and supplication! (Heb 5:7)

THE OUR FATHER, A MODEL OF PRAYER PROVIDED BY JESUS

Matthew 6:5-15. When Jesus taught the Our Father to his disciples, he did not intend for us to use it
exactly the same words of this sentence, since that would be just repeating without awareness, or 'vain
"repetitions," according to Mt 6:7. He gave it to us as a model or guide for prayer. Through this model of prayer
Jesus left us some guidelines on how we should pray. Let's take a look at some of them:

It is done in private (v6), it is directed to the Father (v6b, 8,9), honors God (v9), expresses our desire that His
your will be done instead of ours (v10), requests provision for needs (v11), acknowledges the need
to ask for forgiveness and also to forgive others (v12,14,15), acknowledges the existence of evil and asks for our
liberation (v13a); and finally concludes with praise and worship to God (v13b)

In the Our Father, we find 5 reasons or types of prayer:

1) Request: James 1:5; 1 John 5:14. We pray to ask God to meet any need we have.
Sometimes we ask for things that are not good for us, or that do not align with what God desires for us.
A more intense level of this type of prayer is the cry (Jeremiah 33:3; Psalm 86:7). This is a
petition with anguish, desperation, of life or death. It demonstrates total dependence on God. Cry out in
Speaking out loud seems to be key for a powerful prayer life and to see tremendous answers.
Intercession: (Ezekiel 22:30) It is the prayer in favor of other people: salvation of friends or relatives, the
physical needs, by missionaries, brothers of the church or pastors. (Matthew 5:44; Ephesians 6:18).
3) Thanksgiving: It is the expression of our gratitude for what God does. God commands the
Believer to give "thanks in everything" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). He expects an attitude of gratitude from us.
Praise: (Psalm 100:4) Praise is the declaration of what God has done and who He is, and an expression
of gratitude. Worship is rendering honor and devotion to God. We must worship God in spirit and truth.
aware of what we do and say, selflessly, as a result of genuine love.
5) Confession: (1 John 1:9) A prayer of confession is to repent and ask for forgiveness for sins.
committed. It should become a habit in the life of every believer, as we commit faults every day. God has
promised to forgive anyone who is willing to confess their sin and turn away from it.

Christian Life Bible Manual

How should we pray? Let's look at some biblical attitudes when praying:

• With determination: It must be a decision. It cannot depend on circumstances. (Ps 5:3)

• With sincerity: Before God we can be who we are and speak everything we think. (Psalm 142:2)
• With faith: Let us be sure that God will receive us and answer us. (James 1:6-7; Hebrews 10:22 and 11:6)
• With expectation: When we approach God with the right attitude, SOMETHING ALWAYS HAPPENS. (Psalm 5:3)
• With enough time: By dedicating enough time to our intimacy with God, He can speak to us.
• For love: Intimacy is not about asking, but about giving. Let us seek God only for love. (Psalm 27:4)

THE BIBLICAL FAST

In a practical sense, it is to abstain from food to focus on seeking God through prayer and
bible reading. It is a spiritual practice (Matthew 4:4). It is denying our physical needs to rely even more
more of God. Fasting without praying or focusing on God and His Word is just going hungry without purpose. Fasting is
an act of humility, of dependence on God, aligning our heart and thoughts to the will of God.

Biblical purposes of fasting

• To draw closer to God, to become more like Jesus. (Mt. 4:1-17, Lc. 4:1-13)
• Increase faith. (Mt. 17: 20-21)
• Asking God for help in times of crisis. (Ezra 8:21-23, Nehemiah 1:4-11)
• Seek God's guidance, ask for His direction, know His purpose. (Acts 13:2, Daniel 10:3)
• Intensify prayer. (Mark 9:17-29, Acts 10:30, 1 Cor. 7:5)
• Acquire spiritual purity, strengthening our spirit to resist temptation. (Isaiah 58: 5-7)
• Increase spiritual strength to resist temptation (Luke 4:2)
• Repentance of sins. (Jonah 3:8, 1 Samuel 14:24, Nehemiah 1:4)
• Join in the sorrow or mourning of another person. (1 Samuel 31:13, 2 Samuel 1:12)

How to fast?
• For a certain period of time, abstain from solid food and drink only water.
For example, a 24-hour fast, or one day, would be to have dinner and then not eat anything until dinner the next day.
• Dedicate to prayer and biblical reading at least the time that you normally dedicate to eating.
• Another type of fasting is the fasting that the prophet Daniel did, eating only vegetables and drinking water. (Dn 1:8-16)
• Be cautious when fasting, take care if there is illness, pregnancy, etc.

Practical tips
• It is a spiritual exercise, therefore plan with the Holy Spirit how, where, and when.
• Avoid eating too much before starting the fast; on the contrary, start reducing portions.
• Choose the time, place, and above all, the purpose of the fast.
• Avoid fasting during inconvenient times (such as Christmas, birthdays) or times of heavy work or study.
• Start slowly (maybe with just one or two meals). It shouldn't feel like a burden or punishment.
• Let it be something personal and secret. Do not go announcing it to half the world. (Matthew 6: 17-18)
• Present your fast before God, say: "Lord, here I am, give me strength during this fasting period …"
• End your fast with gratitude, write down what you received, meditate on those things, and await their response.

BIBLE STUDY

The Holy Scriptures constitute the inspired and infallible Word of God, superior to conscience and reason.
Both the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God and are the revelation of God.
for man, the infallible, absolute, and authoritative rule of faith and conduct.

The Bible is the Word of God, it is the spiritual food we need to grow and renew our minds.
That's why we must discipline ourselves in its daily reading (Matthew 4:4). We must continually nourish ourselves with the
Word to achieve significant changes in our lives. The habit of meditating and studying in a way
Systematically studying the Holy Scriptures will bring a lot of fruit to our lives. It is not enough to read it 'in passing', only
fulfill. The Lord wants to speak to us and instill in our hearts a new message every day. The Bible contains
history and science, but it is not a book of history or science. The Bible is a book of salvation, through
how we come to know God and His will for us. (2 Tim 3:15)

The Word of God is to our spirit and soul what food is to our body. It's somewhat like 'the
"user manual" through which God guides us on how we should live our lives.
so that we may enjoy peace and prosperity, and so that it may go well for us in life. (Deuteronomy 4:40)

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO READ AND STUDY THE BIBLE (2 Timothy 3:14-17)

The Word of God teaches us: The first thing the Bible teaches us is the way of salvation, through
the faith in Jesus Christ. Also how to live our Christian life, just as Jesus wants us to. The Bible is
the textbook in the school of life. One cannot be a disciple of Jesus without remaining in His Word and doing
his will (John 15:5,10). The Bible teaches us the will of God. God does not force us to do anything, he only teaches us.

The Word of God reproves us: the word reproach means to use an argument against the person who it

errors. Convince sinners of their condition. Act as a red light that warns of the danger we are in.
we find and like a traffic sign that indicates the proper exit. The Word of God is the
instrument that the Holy Spirit uses to convict us of sin (John 16:8).

The Word of God corrects us: The Bible is a kind of mirror that reflects two realities. On one hand,
reflects what we are and our spiritual and emotional condition; and on the other hand, it reflects the person that God
wait for us to be. That contrast is what helps us make the necessary changes.

The Word of God instructs us in righteousness: The Word teaches us to walk in the path of righteousness and
in the life of faith. It guides us regarding what is right and what is not according to God's will. It points to the
moral, intellectual, but above all spiritual formation. Their instruction aims at the total regeneration of
our lives until we reach the fullness of Christ. (Eph 3:19; 4:13)

The Word of God perfects us: The Bible is a kind of instruction manual prepared by
our Creator, so that we know how we function, and consequently, live correctly, so as not to
to ruin us. When that instruction manual is set aside, our life does not reach perfection, it is
To say, it becomes disadjusted. But if we cling to the Word, it makes us fit for life. (1 Tim 3:17a)

Christian Life Bible Manual

The Word of God equips us for good works: The Bible empowers us to serve God and others.
Ephesians 2:10 says that we were "created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.
so that we could walk in them." In this context, the Bible is somewhat like a map that guides us to walk.
in those good works that God intended for us, and to guide us in God's purpose.

GUIDELINES FOR READING AND STUDYING THE BIBLE PROFITABLY

• Every time we go to read or study the Bible, let us specifically ask God for illumination and
revelation of the Holy Spirit, in such a way that our eyes are opened and we can understand it
what it says and apply it to our lives. (John 16:13; Ephesians 1:17)
• Find a quiet place and a fixed schedule to dedicate ourselves to reading the Word without
distractions, or as few as possible, in order to develop the habit of daily Bible study.
• Choose a specific portion of the Bible that is interesting to you, read it several times,
underline the verses that catch our attention and take note of the teachings that you find.
• Today there are several translations of the Bible, such as the Reina Valera, NVI, NTV, RVA, among others. It is
It is advisable to read the same passage in several translations to gain greater clarity about it.
There are mobile apps or websites where you can easily access all of them.
• To understand some words, concepts or biblical passages, it is very useful to refer to a dictionary or
Biblical commentary. It is fascinating how much light it can shed on topics we know little about.
• Start reading a book from the Bible in an orderly and systematic way.
• We recommend that new believers start with Saint Mark, as it is simple and brief.
• To understand some biblical stories, it is necessary to study the customs and practices of the time.
• The goal is to read the entire Bible at least once, for that a daily reading plan is necessary.
