The Black Cat is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe that explores themes of guilt, madness, and the

nature of evil. The narrator, who claims to be mentally unstable, recounts his life and the deterioration of his psyche after a series of violent events, primarily influenced by alcoholism. He becomes increasingly cruel to his pets, especially his beloved black cat, Pluto. Eventually, in a fit of rage, he blinds Pluto and later kills him. Haunted by guilt, the narrator adopts another cat that resembles Pluto but has a distinct white patch. This new cat drives him to madness, and in a moment of fury, he kills his wife when she intervenes while he tries to harm the cat. In an attempt to conceal his crime, he hides her body in the wall of their home.
