THEME: PRAYER

LESSON 1: I CAN TALK TO GOD

LESSON OBJECTIVE
This Sunday school lesson will help the children know how much it pleases God when they talk
with Him through prayer.

BIBLE VERSE
"Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me!" Psalm 27:7 NLT
Explain to the children that God wants us to come and talk to Him. God wants us to tell Him
what is on our hearts and minds. God is a great listener and wants the very best for us. We can
talk to God at any time and in any place.

BIBLE STORY

Introduction:

- How can we talk to someone who is not in the same room with us? (Suggest things like
phones, letters, e-mails, or maybe even shouting).

Today, we will be learning that God loves it when we talk to Him. Another name for talking to
God is called prayer. Isn't it great that God wants us to talk to Him? How should we talk or pray
to God? The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:13 that when we pray, God wants us to pray with all of
our heart and really talk to Him.

Read Jeremiah 29:11-13

Discussion Questions:
1. What is another name for talking to God? (Prayer.)
2. How should we pray to God? (With our whole heart.)
3. Does God listen when we talk to Him in prayer? (Yes.)
4. What kind of future does God want us to have? (God wants us to have a happy future and
wants us to prosper.)
5. Does God like it when we pray to Him? (Yes, it please God when we talk to Him.)
6. What are some things we can talk about with God when we pray? (Allow for
answers.)

CLOSING ACTIVITY
There are many different ways in which we can pray. We can pray when we are standing,
walking, kneeling, bowing, or singing. We can pray quietly when we are lying down in bed. We
can pray with our hands together or with outstretched arms. We can pray in the morning, before
meals, and even at night. (Make it a fun activity)

Talk about how important it is for us to pray to God. Sit down with your children and quietly talk
to God. It is an easy way to set an example for them. Pray about whatever you feel like. Some
examples could be to thank Him for the beautiful weather that allows us to play outside or maybe
for the rain because the flowers and plants are no longer thirsty. Kids say some pretty amazing
things during prayers. Allow the children to express themselves to God and provide some
guidance if needed. This can be a great time for teaching and growing.

DAILY PRAYER

Dear Lord, Thank You for listening to me when I talk to You. I love how open and caring You
are. You always listen to every prayer I say and think. Help me learn that talking with You is a
very important thing to do so I can have a close relationship with You. Thank You, God, for
Your love. I love You too. Amen.
