SC Alternator

Here is the SC alternator that has been newly adopted on the ESTIMA
model recently launched by TOYOTA.
(SC: segment conductor) (Only for Japanese Market)

1 Summary
The SC alternator uses a new type of segment conductor consisting of angular copper wires to achieve high power
output in a compact configuration. In addition, the new alternator reduces the magnetic noise by providing the sta-
tor with a dual winding of the coil.

3-2 Segment Conductor (Angular Copper Wire)
The SC alternator has adopted a joined segment conductor system in which segment conductors (angular copper
wires) are inserted and joined, in place of a stator with a winding system. Compared to the conventional type, the
new alternator reduces resistance by one-half and realizes a higher power output and efficiency in a compact con-
figuration.

3-3 Dual Winding


A dual winding system with two sets of three-phase windings are provided to cancel out each other's magnetic
fluctuations that are created at the stator. As a result, the magnetic noise that is generated by the alternator is dra-
matically reduced.

3-4 Rectifier (Diodes)
The rectifier contains 12 diodes to rectify the alternating current that is generated at the stator coil into direct cur-
rent. The diagram below shows how the positive [+] and negative [-] rectifiers (diodes) are connected.

3-5 New Type IC Regulator


In contrast to the conventional IC regulator in which the regulator circuit is
formed on a ceramic board, this regulator integrates the circuit into a single
chip, resulting in a compact configuration.

The IC regulator in the conventional alternator contains transistors on the low side. In contrast, the IC regulator in
the SC alternator contains transistors on the high side.

* A switching element located at the higher potential to the load is called "the high side", and a switching element
located at the lower potential to the load is called "the low side".
