MAITREYI COLLEGE

MAITREYI COLLEGE

MAITREYI COLLEGE

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Students,
Education is a preparation for life. Sensitivity, creativity, and values are the markers of an
enriched mind. Higher education at Maitreyi College is aimed at helping students achieve
these goals. Maximizing value-addition and skill-enhancement, the college offers courses in
Science, Commerce and Humanities, while also training students to become well-rounded
citizens capable of effectively contributing to the society and the country.
As an A++ accredited college by NAAC, this institution is where learning meets opportunity
and talent meets mentorship! The Centre for Research (CFR) in the college trains students
in nuances of research, enabling them to become published scholars from the very start.
Short-Term Courses and Certificate Courses offered in the college enhance students’
industry-competence and employability. The college incubates student-run start-ups, and
the Entrepreneurship Cell offers a springboard to these young, aspiring minds, making
them industry-ready. The 147.7% jump in internships and job placements witnessed this
year, testifies to the fact that the college Placement Cell is a veritable bridge between our
students and opportunities. In addition to these facilities, a total of 14 vibrant cultural
societies and other cells of the college diversify student-exposure across various fields--
from marketing to filmmaking, fine arts, debating, theater, among others. Sports facilities
follow the same standard and continue to be par excellence. The college also hosts various
special training programs, unified tournaments in association with the Olympic Baharat.
Daily coaching sessions for students are supplemented by the requisite infrastructure.
All these initiatives are further fine-tuned to match the goals outlined in the National
Education Policy (NEP). Hence learning at Maitreyi is inclusive, interdisciplinary,
experiential and involves a substantial use of the ICT. The curricular, co-curricular and
extracurricular initiatives are facilitated by an incredibly motivated group of staff
members. The college faculty comprises fine educators who are also seasoned researchers.
They occupy various positions of academic merit in their respective fields and are
recipients of national and international honors. Informed by contemporary demands and a

VIDUSHI MAITREYI
Maitreyi College, a constituent College of the University of Delhi, was founded in 1967 by the Delhi
administration. The College community is proud to bear the name of Maitreyi, who was an eminent scholar of
the Vedic period and the wife of sage Yajnavalakya. She had keen interest in philosophical knowledge and
cultivated a thirst for theological truths since early age. She was interested in gaining knowledge of the Vedas,
Upanishads and Sastras. Maitreyi chose knowledge over worldly possessions, when asked by her husband to
make a choice between the two.

The great Maitreyi Upanishad is a contribution to the world of theology which explains with many analogies and
metaphors the concept of self, atman, as the ultimate reality, emphasizing the value of renunciation. The
dialogue between Maitreyi and Yajnavalakya in Brihadaranyaka Upanishad shows her as an empowered
woman, determined to attain self-realization through knowledge. It has been our objective to weave these values
into the fabric of our education system, which is a blend of the best of tradition and modernity.

MAITREYI COLLEGE

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Maitreyi College is an eminent constituent college of the University of Delhi, offering quality
education to women. Named after Maitreyi, an eminent scholar, philosopher and sage of
the Vedic period, the vision of the college embodies the spirit of its namesake – the
relentless pursuit of knowledge irrespective of the social determinants of identity such as
gender, caste, class among others. It symbolizes an exemplary balance between tradition
and modernity i.e. the ability to be open to new ideas while being rooted in one’s own
systems of thought and practice. Maitreyi is one of the top six colleges to be conferred Star
Status (for all Science departments) by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), GOI; was
awarded “A++” Grade in the NAAC Accreditation cycle of 2022 and all-India overall rank of
36 in 2023.

To facilitate academic growth, the college is committed to provide the best infrastructural
facilities to its stakeholders. The beautiful lush green 10-acre campus of the college is Wi-
Fi-enabled, and boasts of a well-stocked and fully automated library, amphitheater,
auditorium, sports center, and extensive playgrounds. Recently, a new Science Block has
been added. The aura and ambience of the campus makes it an ideal academic hub. The
college is about to achieve yet another milestone i.e., the newly constructed Girls Hostel.

Maitreyi College offers 18 Undergraduate programmes, and 2 Postgraduate programmes.

There are around 4,000 students enrolled in the academic year 2022-23. The College aims
for a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary learning environment wherein students from
various disciplines interact and engage in both academic and cultural spheres. A committed
and distinguished faculty is the core of Maitreyi, that is ably supported by an efficient
technical and administrative staff. The College promotes interdisciplinary collaborations
and motivates faculty and students to publish their work in journals of national and
international repute.

We have a deeply rooted practice of participatory and collaborative learning, as evidenced

by our more than 40 vibrant student bodies. The various departments, societies, clubs and
committees of the college regularly organise a plethora of events, seminars, conferences,
competitions and fests. These events pivot around themes of gender equity, eco-
consciousness, social responsibilities, constitutional rights and values, cultural heritage and
linguistic diversity to name a few. As a part of social outreach, the college organises several
extension and outreach programs as well.

Maitreyi has set up a ‘Centre for Research’ to foster a conducive research climate under the
Advisory Committee for Professional Grooming. Over 154 projects have been completed
under this. A theme based, peer reviewed academic journal ‘Vantage: Journal of Thematic
Analysis’ (ISSN 2582-7391) with zero publication fee has also been established by the
college. Furthermore, the College has a multitude of publications including a peer-reviewed
e-Research magazine 'Samvedna' (ISSN 2581-9917); and more than twelve magazines and

newsletters by different departments. All these endeavours are multidisciplinary and the
result of collective labour of students and faculty.

With large number of MoUs and collaborations, the College strives to bridge the gap
between academics and industry. The College has an active Placement Cell 'Horizon' for
providing career guidance and job opportunities. The College hosts an internship cum
placement fair ‘Envision’ every year. To foster entrepreneurial talent and promote a culture
of job creation (rather than job seeking), the College has a vibrant and active
Entrepreneurship Cell which has launched several successful projects and start-ups,
namely; ‘Kriti’, ‘Gulistan’, ‘Stay Mentor’, ‘Eco Handy’, ‘Urvara’, ‘Sugary Frost’, ‘Edulibrary’
and ‘Dhriti’.
The College is committed towards holistic development of our fraternity (Maitreyi
Kutumb) by inculcating ethos of inclusivity and diversity. The Enabling Unit of the college
actively engages itself to promote sensitivity and awareness towards issues related to
disabilities and the specially-abled. The ‘Sashakt Nodal Sports Centre’, in collaboration with
Special Olympic Bharat, Delhi, epitomises the institution’s sense of inclusiveness. Maitreyi
College is proud of its well-established Sports Centre and Facility dedicated to promoting
Netball among young and enthusiastic girls of our country. This facility named as ‘Pragati’
imparts physical ability training and techniques for playing netball in India. All these efforts
are aimed at developing an inclusive, holistic and aware ethos for our students. As a part of
social outreach initiative of University of Delhi, the College has also been functioning as a
Non-Collegiate Womens’ Education Board (NCWEB) Undergraduate Teaching Centre for
several years, and presently caters to more than 1000 girls residing in Delhi. Enactus
Maitreyi, works relentlessly for the upliftment of the marginalised members of the society.
‘Misbah’, ‘Samya’, ‘DaanUtsav’ and ‘Unnayan’ are the prominent projects of Enactus which
have generated employment for over ten individuals and uplifted the economic lives of
many others by providing a platform for their products. Our College is a Participating
Institute (PI) in the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) programme of the Government of India
wherein it has adopted five villages; namely Jewar Bagar, Malwa Gopalgarh, Mangroli,
Thora and Bhabhogra with the aim to contribute towards rural development. Within a
short span of six months, it has built up a place among the villagers by organising
successful tree plantation drives and health awareness programs.
At Maitreyi, we encourage environment-friendly and eco-conscious practices. Use of energy
efficient equipment, conducting energy and green audits, rainwater harvesting, vermi-
composting and recycling are a few potential steps in this direction. The college is proud of
its lush gardens, including Herbal Garden, Rock Garden and Rose Garden, which also act as
carbon sink. The robust system of e-governance for planning and development,
administration, finance and accounts, student admission and support along with the
beautiful infrastructure of the college makes Maitreyi a desired destination for knowledge
seekers and providers.
