STARTER GROUPS / WEEKEND HOMEWORK (WEEK 7)

PART A: READING

Text 1:
* Before Reading:
Discuss: Do you shop when you need to buy things or just to make yourself feel good?
What did you last buy? Why did you buy it?

* Read the text below and answer the following questions.

Shopping!!!

Feeling lonely? Why don’t you go to a shopping mall?

You can buy a new pair of shoes, a nice jacket or a new
computer game. It is quick and easy. You just get in your car
and drive to a shopping mall. Shopping malls are everywhere,
and they are open 24 hours.
Many people do the shopping when they need to buy
things, but some people go shopping for different reasons.
Actually, shopping is a favorite hobby for many people today
and they go shopping to change their mood. You feel very good
when you buy new things for yourself, but your credit card bills
make you very sad when you are not careful with your shopping.
Shopping is sometimes similar to an addiction; that is, it
becomes a very serious habit like smoking or taking drugs,
because it is very enjoyable. People get into the dangerous habit
of spending money to feel good and they spend more than they
earn.
How do you understand an addicted shopper? The
answer isn’t easy, but addicted shoppers’ characteristics are
usually common. They generally buy a lot of clothes, but they
never wear them. They often hide their shopping from their
families and they don’t show their new things to them. They usually buy things to forget about their
stress or personal problems because they cannot share their problems with anybody. But then, they
have a serious shopping problem.
So, our shopping shows us something about ourselves when we do it a lot: there is some
problem in our lives and we must do something about it!

Text 2:

* Before Reading: Talk about polite & rude behaviors in your society.
What kinds of behaviors are rude or polite in your society now?
What were the behaviors like in your society in the past?
Are the behaviors today better or worse?

* Read the text below and answer the following questions.

Some people say people are not very polite nowadays, but people in the past were more polite.
Actually, behaviors changed a lot and they are different in modern times. For example, people these
days eat while they are walking down the street. They don’t mind kissing each other when or where
they want. They push on each other on buses and trains. Men do not open doors for women any more
or give their seat to a woman on a crowded train.
Young people think today behaviors are better than the past because life is faster these days.
People do not have time for polite or serious behaviors: for example, they eat on the streets because
they do not have enough time. In the past, men wore a suit and a tie, but these days they prefer casual
clothes at work, so they wear clothes such as jeans and a T-shirt. People do not address each other
with “Mr” or “Mrs” nowadays, but they use first names to address each other. All young people in the
society think it is friendlier and more relaxed.
But old people do not agree that today behaviors are better than the past. For old people,
everybody, especially young people, are becoming rude and selfish. For them, people shouldn’t kiss
each other in public because it is not nice for other people. Old people criticize young people because
they make noise, talk on the mobile phones loudly, and listen to music loudly on trains or buses. They
think young people are rude and bad.
So, behaviors are changing nowadays in the 21 st century, but everything is not that bad. Many
people think some behaviors are also good in modern life and they say behaviors change because
lifestyles and people also change.
