Common Cold (Gan Mao)

 Key signs and symptoms: acute onset, nasal congestion, runny nose,
coughing, sneezing, headache, fever, general body aches
 TCM Etiology:
 Underlying Zheng Qi Def
 Exogenous Pathogenic Invasion blocks LU Qi and Wei Qi
 TCM Pathogenesis:
 LU Qi is blocked, can’t D&D → cough, nasal congestion, sore throat
 Wei Qi is blocked; it can’t properly warm the body → Chills, and, the fight
between Zheng Qi and Pathogens → Fever
 Relevant Western Disease:
 Common Cold, Viral infection of Upper Respiratory Tract, Influenza
Common Cold (Gan Mao)

 Excessive Cold, raw and greasy foods → Phlegm
 Repressed emotions stagnates LR → Fire
 Long-term illness depletes LU Qi + Yin
 TCM Pathogenesis:
 LU Qi reversed due to obstruction or lack of nourishment

 Tracheitis, Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, Pneumonia, COPD, TB, Pleurisy,
Bronchial Carcinoma, HT Failure

 Excessive factors like Wind, Cold, Phlegm or Qi Stagnation block the LU
 Def of LU + KI can’t nourish LU
 TCM Pathogenesis:
 LU Qi cannot descend

 Asthma, Bronchitis, Pneumonia, COPD, Bronchial Carcinoma, Pulmonary
embolism, Left ventricular failure, Cor Pulmonale, Hysterical dyspnea,
Anemia

Wheezing/Asthma (Xiao Zheng)

 Key signs and symptoms: acute attacks of difficult breathing w/whistling


sounds. Often seen together w/Dyspnea
 TCM Etiology:
 Def of SP, LU or KI in metabolizing water → latent Phlegm
 Exogenous Pathogenic Invasion
 TCM Pathogenesis:
 Exogenous Pathogens stirs up latent Phlegm in LU
 Relevant Western Disease:
 Allergic asthma, Bronchial asthma, Asthmatic bronchitis, Cardiac asthma,
Eosinophilia
Wheezing/Asthma (Xiao Zheng)
