Charlie looked at the ground. There were lots of tiny pieces of paper.
“Why didn’t you keep your money in the bank? It’s safer there.” “I don’t like
banks, kid. But, oh, what a disaster!” Mr. Garcia looked very sad.
“So the rats ate your money,” said Charlie. “But the situation isn’t as bad as
you think. Tell me this. What did you do with that money?”
“Um… nothing. I just guarded it and worried about it.”
“Then what was it good for?”

“I hate summer vacation, Jody,” Kurt complained to his sister. “There’s nothi
ng to do.”
“I don’t want to just sit around, either,” Jody replied. “Luckily, I have an
amazing idea: let’s go traveling in time!”
“Time travel?” said Kurt. “Can we really do that?”
“Definitely!” said Jody. “We just need a time 1________. And I think we’ll fin
d all we need to build one right here in the garage.”
Before long, Kurt and Jody were standing back to admire their finished ma
chine. Just then, they heard their mother call, “It’s almost dinnertime!”
“We shouldn’t be late for dinner,” said Kurt. “Mom won’t be happy!”
“Don’t worry, we have a time machine now,” Jody said. “We’ll 2_______

pressed the red button. Suddenly, the time machine started to
rumble and shake.
It spun and turned in the air. Finally, it screeched to a halt.
Kurt and Jody eagerly stepped out—onto hot, desert sand!
They couldn’t believe their eyes. There were ancient Egyptian pyramids in
front of them, and one of them was still under construction!
“Oops! I guess I turned the dial the wrong way,” said Jody in surprise.“We’re
in the past, not the future. Let’s try again!”
“OK,” said Kurt. “I can’t wait to see what the future is like!”
“Let’s find out,” said Jody. She turned the dial and pressed the red button
again.
“Will there be flying cars?” asked Kurt as they sped through the
years. “Will we make friends with a 4______________?”
“I don’t know!” shouted Jody over the roar of the time machine.
“Here we are: the year 3000,” said Jody as the time machine
bumped to a stop.
“Wow, look at those flying cars!” said Kurt, as he climbed out of the time
machine to explore the city.
“Uh-oh, Kurt. What’s that?” said Jody. Something enormous and metal was
racing toward them.
“It’s a robot,” said Kurt, “but I don’t think he’ll be our friend…”
“ATTENTION,” said the robot loudly, “TIME MACHINES ARE NOT ALLOWED

IN THIS AREA. I WILL TAKE YOU TO THE POLICE STATION. YOU WILL PAY
A FINE OR GO TO PRISON.”
Jody grabbed Kurt’s arm and pulled him back inside the time machine. She
quickly turned the dial and pressed the red 5_______________. Soon they
crashed back into the present.
“Whew!” said Jody. “That was close!”
Then they heard their mother call, “Jody, Kurt, dinnertime!” They took a
