Overview:
Computers are everywhere: at work, at school, and at home. Computers are a primary means of local and
global communications for billions of people. Through computers, society has instant access to information from
around the globe. This module presents the knowledge you need to be computer literate. The course acquaints
students to discover different and innovative ways of using various technology and learn how computing is applied
creatively to solve problems. Students will finish this course with a solid understanding of computers, how to use
computers, and how to access information on the Web.
Objectives:
General Objective
To understand the importance of the operating system and utility programs work with the
application software.
Identify the key features of widely used graphics and multimedia programs and widely used of home,
personal, and educational programs.
Identify the types of application software used in communications.
Describe the learning aids available for application software.
Instruction to the Learner
Each chapter in this module contains a major lesson involving the introduction to computers and learn
how computing is applied creatively to solve problems. The units are characterized by continuity, and are arranged
in such a manner that the present unit is related to the next unit. For this reason, you are advised to read this
module. After each unit, there are exercises to be given. Submission of task given will be submitted by the agreed
deadline.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Introduction
Application software consists of programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist with
personal tasks.
● To make business activities more efficient
● To assist with graphics and multimedia projects
● To support home, personal, and educational tasks
● To facilitate communications
Available in a variety of forms:
● Packaged software
● Custom software
● Web application
● Open source software
● Shareware
● Freeware
● Public-domain software
System software
Serves as the interface between the user, the application software, and the computer’s hardware:
Utility programs.

Business software
Is an application software that assists people while performing business activities.
• Word processing software allows users to create and manipulate documents. Example of Word
processing software is the Microsoft Word.

Backstage View
⮚ To get started, click the File menu to show the Backstage View’s tab listed on the left side of the window.
⮚ Info, New, Open, Save, Save As, Print, Share, Export,
Close, Account, and Options are some of the items you’ll
encounter.
⮚ If you need to create a new document, go to the New
option where you can select a template for it.
⮚ Opening the existing document can be done by hitting the
Open button. Recently used documents will show up in
Recent documents.
⮚ To save changes you’ve made in an existing document,
press the Save button. To save the newly created
document somewhere on your computer, use Save As.
⮚ By using the Print tab, you can print your document on a printer.

⮚ If you want to share your document with other people, go to the Share tab. You can attach a document to
an email message and send it to anybody. Sharing online can also be done through the SkyDrive.
⮚ When you need to create a PDF or XPS file from a MS Word document, you can change the file type by using
the Export tab.
⮚ Finally, you can close the document by clicking the Close tab.

● Spreadsheet software allows users to organize data in rows and columns and perform calculations.
Example of spreadsheet software is the Microsoft excel.

data. Example of database software is the Microsoft Access.

• Online Help is the electronic equivalent of a user manual. You can ask a
question or access the Help topics in subject or alphabetical order.
