 Transport and communication are two essential means of


connecting people, places, and ideas.

 They help in the movement of goods, services, and information.

Transport means the movement of people and goods from one place to
another.
It is essential for:

 Trade and commerce

Types of Transport

There are three main types of transport:

A. Land Transport

 Movement on land using roads or railways.

 Advantages: Cheapest for short distances, available everywhere.

(i) Roadways

 Vehicles: Cars, buses, trucks, two-wheelers, bicycles.

 Highways: Connect cities and states (e.g., National Highways in


India).

 Expressways: Faster roads for long-distance travel.

(ii) Railways

 Trains carry passengers and heavy goods.


 Benefits: Cheapest for long-distance and bulk goods.

 India has one of the largest railway networks in the world.

B. Water Transport

 Movement through rivers, seas, and oceans.

 Types:

o Inland Waterways: Rivers and canals (e.g., Ganga,


Brahmaputra).

o Sea Routes: Ships and boats for trade and travel.

 Advantages: Cheapest for heavy and bulky goods.

 Disadvantages: Slow and depends on weather.

C. Air Transport

 Movement through air using airplanes and helicopters.

 Fastest mode of transport.

 Useful for:

o Long-distance travel

o Perishable goods

o Emergency and disaster relief

 Disadvantages: Very costly, needs airports.

3. Communication

Communication means sending and receiving messages or information


from one place to another.

Types of Communication

1. Personal Communication – Between individuals.

o Letters, mobile phones, emails.


2. Mass Communication – Reaches a large audience at once.

o Newspapers, radio, television, internet.

Modern Means of Communication

 Telephones & Mobile Phones – Quick voice communication.

 Internet – Emails, video calls, social media.

 Television & Radio – News, entertainment, education.

 Postal Services – Letters, parcels, money orders.
