CONSTITUTION OF THE STUDENT UNION

PREAMBLE

We, the students of [Name of Institution], having firmly resolved to unite under one body for the
promotion of our welfare, academic excellence, cultural values, and democratic participation, do
hereby make and enact this constitution.

ARTICLE I – NAME

The name of the body shall be The Student Union of [Institution’s Name], hereafter referred to as
the Union.

ARTICLE II – AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Union shall seek to:

1. Protect and promote the welfare and academic interests of all students.

2. Foster unity, cooperation, and mutual understanding among students.

3. Represent students in all dealings with the institution’s management and external bodies.

4. Organize social, cultural, educational, and sporting activities for the benefit of members.

5. Promote and defend the rights and responsibilities of students.

ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP

1. Membership shall be open to all registered students of [Institution’s Name].

2. Every member shall enjoy equal rights and privileges, subject to the provisions of this
Constitution.

3. Membership ceases upon graduation, withdrawal, expulsion, or suspension from the institution.

ARTICLE IV – ORGANS OF THE UNION

The organs of the Union shall be:

1. The Congress (General Assembly): Supreme decision-making body, consisting of all members.

2. The Executive Council: Responsible for day-to-day administration.

3. The Judiciary/Disciplinary Committee: Responsible for interpretation of the Constitution and


student disciplinary issues.

4. The Legislative Council (Parliament): Makes by-laws, approves budgets, and checks the
Executive.

ARTICLE V – THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

The Executive Council shall consist of:

1. President

2. Vice President
3. General Secretary

4. Assistant General Secretary

5. Treasurer

6. Financial Secretary

7. Director of Socials

8. Director of Sports

9. Public Relations Officer (PRO)

Functions of the Executive Council:

- President: Chief spokesperson and leader of the Union.

- Vice President: Assists and acts in the absence of the President.

- General Secretary: Keeps records, correspondence, and minutes.

- Treasurer: Custodian of Union funds.

- Financial Secretary: Prepares financial reports and budgets.

- Directors/PRO: Handle specific portfolios (socials, sports, publicity, etc.).

ARTICLE VI – THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

1. Shall consist of representatives from each faculty/department.

2. Shall have power to make by-laws, scrutinize budgets, and summon the Executive.

3. Speaker and Deputy Speaker shall preside over meetings.

ARTICLE VII – THE JUDICIARY

1. Shall consist of a Chief Judge, judges, and other members appointed from the student body.

2. Shall interpret the Constitution and settle disputes within the Union.

3. Shall have power to discipline members or dissolve organs found guilty of misconduct.

ARTICLE VIII – ELECTIONS

1. Elections shall be conducted by an Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) appointed by the


Congress.

2. Voting shall be by secret ballot.

3. All candidates must be bona fide students with good academic and moral standing.

4. Tenure of office shall be one academic session, unless otherwise decided by the Congress.

ARTICLE IX – FINANCE
1. The Union’s funds shall come from:

- Membership dues

- Institutional subventions

- Fundraising activities

- Donations (subject to approval)

2. All funds must be deposited in the Union’s bank account.

3. Annual financial reports shall be presented to the Congress.

ARTICLE X – MEETINGS

1. Congress Meetings: Held at least once per semester.

2. Executive Meetings: Held regularly as determined by the President.

3. Emergency Meetings: May be called when necessary.

ARTICLE XI – AMENDMENTS

1. Any member may propose an amendment.

2. Amendments must be approved by two-thirds (2/3) majority of the Congress.

ARTICLE XII – SUPREMACY OF THE CONSTITUTION

This Constitution shall be the supreme guiding document of the Student Union. All Union organs,
members, and activities shall be subject to its provisions.
