Early life and education
Kurien was born on 26
November 1921 in , Kozhikode .
Kerala

He attended school in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu
In 1940 he received a
bachelor's degree in
mechanical engineering
from theCollege of Engineering, Guindy
Dr. Kurien chose to study dairy
engineering.
He went to the Imperial Institute
of Animal Husbandry in Bangalore
now known as NRDI South Station
Bangalore.
Then he went to Michigan state
university America on govt
scholarship and did masters in
mechanical engineering
(metallutgy).
Dairy industry as a minor subject
The Turning Point
After that he set up a Amul dairy it was a
turning point.

In 1949 Kurien he was posted as dairy


engineer at the government research
creamery in Anand Gujarat.

Met a business man - Pestonjee (owner of


Polson dairy)

Tribhvandas Patel - trying his best to unite


the farmers to form cooperative
movement.

Patel succeeded and formed KDCMPUL

Operation Flood
Operation Flood is the program that led
to "White Revolution."

The world's largest dairy development


program and a landmark project of
India's National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)

It created a national milk grid linking


producers throughout India to
consumers in over 700 towns and cities
and reducing seasonal and regional
price variations while ensuring that
producers get a major share of the
profit by eliminating the middlemen.
Operation Flood was implemented in three
phases
Phase 1 During this phase Operation Flood linked 18 of India's
premier milk sheds with consumers in India's major
metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai,
establishing mother dairies in the four metros.
It lasted till 1979 from 1970
Improving organised daily sector
Increase of producers share in milk market
Speeding up the development of dairy animals in rural area
