1 Q Read the text and diary extracts. What did Ollie and Jack
find on their journey?

Looking fo r treasure
In 2010, an American man hid a big box full of treasure somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. His name is Forrest Fenn
and he was over 80 years old at the time. Fenn is an art expert, and he had a lot of old and very expensive objects. He filled
his box with jewellery, diamonds and gold, and then buried it in a secret place in the mountains. Why did he do that?
He wanted to give families a reason to enjoy time in nature. In his opinion, children spend a lot of time on computers and
need to do more outdoor activities. The result? Thousands of people are looking for Forrest Fenn’s treasure. Below are
diary extracts from two young treasure hunters.

Too many pings!
I love my mobile phone. I am never without it. It’s a smart phone, so I can do anything on it: access
the internet (of course). This means I can check all my social media, play games, check the news, get
the weather forecast etc. I can also use google to check any
questions I have. However, the thing I use the most is
WhatsApp. I love it! You can attach photos and swap messages
with friends and you can be in WhatsApp groups. On top of that,
it’s free! However, WhatsApp became a problem for me. I was in
so many groups that my phone never stopped pinging! Last week,
I left my phone in the bedroom, but I forgot to put it on silent.
I have a friend who was on holiday in Australia, so I got ‘ping,
ping, ping’, starting at 1am in the morning. Eventually, I had to
get up and turn it off. Then a few days ago, I had so many pings
I did not check them immediately. That was a real shame – I
missed an important message. My friend asked me if I could give her a lift to the hospital. I picked
up the message too late. So, yesterday, I deleted a few groups. It was difficult! I said goodbye to
the art class group, the local community group and the neighbourhood watch group. I kept my cake
and coffee at the café and my fundraising for tigers groups. Well, priorities… By Monica
