Overview of Various Sports Awards in India:
About the National Sports Award:
The National Sports Awards are presented annually to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
Allocation: The awards are allocated by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports each year. The
winners receive their awards from the President of India at the Presidential Palace.
Categories of Awards: The National Sports Awards are considered the pinnacle of sporting ho-
nours in India and are given across six different categories to sportspersons, coaches, or organi-
zations for their achievements and contributions to the growth of Indian sports.
Collection of Awards in Sports:
1. Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award:
India’s Highest Sporting Honour.
Established: 1991-92, renamed in 2021 after Major Dhyan Chand, India's hockey legend.
Award Criteria: Given for outstanding performances over a period of four years.
Prize: Cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.
First Awardees (1991-92): Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand and Geet Sethi (English Bil-
liards).

o Harmanpreet Singh (Hockey)
o Praveen Kumar (Para-Athletics)

2. Dronacharya Award:
Awarded To: Coaches for consistent and meritorious work in training sportspersons who excel in
international events.
Name Origin: Named after Dronacharya, Arjuna’s coach in the Mahabharata.
Prize: Bronze statue of Dronacharya, a certificate, and a cash prize.
First Woman Awardee (2002): Renu Kohli (Athletics Coach).
3. Arjuna Award:
Awarded To: Sportspersons for outstanding performance over the past four years.
Named After: Arjuna, the hero of the Mahabharata.
Established: 1961.
Prize: Statuette of Arjuna, a certificate, and a cash prize.
First Winner: PK Banerjee (Football Olympian).
First Woman Winner: Anna Lumsden.
4. Arjuna Award (Lifetime):
Purpose: Honors retired sportspersons for their contributions to sports during their careers and
their ongoing promotion of sports after retirement.
2024 Winners:
o Shri Sucha Singh (Athletics)
o Shri Murlikant Rajaram Petkar (Para-Swimming)
5. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy:
Established: 1956–1957.
Awarded To: An institution or university for top performance in inter-university tournaments over
the past year.
Prize: A rolling trophy (passed to the winner each year) and a cash prize.
2024 Winner: Chandigarh University.
6. Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar:
Awarded To: Organizations or individuals for their contributions to sports promotion and devel-
opment over the last three years.
2024 Winner: Physical Education Foundation of India.
