In my second consecutive year with The NUMed Times, the university's

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Elective
June 2024 - July 2024 (2 months)
Permai Psychiatric Hospital

During my 4-week elective in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, I had the

opportunity to observe and participate in psychiatric consultations with
both clinic and ward patients. Under the direct supervision of Dr. Sankari,
a specialist psychiatrist at Hospital Permai, I gained hands-on experience
in managing sensitive cases, especially those involving minors, where
strict confidentiality measures were enforced. Dr. Sankari, who also trains
postgraduate and medical students, provided invaluable guidance, but much
of the learning was self-directed, allowing me to take control of my educational
journey. This elective offered a unique perspective on the importance of soft
skills in psychiatry, making it a highly rewarding experience.

procedures and clinical skills. Dr. Shanmugam was an excellent supervisor
who provided valuable guidance, but much of my learning was self-directed,
allowing me to actively engage in my education. I had the chance to assist
in various procedures and observed both emergency and elective surgeries
during an on-call shift with my supervisor. This experience significantly
enhanced my understanding of the specialty.
