SPROUTS SHAWL
Designed by Lisa Hounshell
Since there are special techniques for continuously working the square motifs in this project,
you will need to be familiar with the basics of Breakaway Crochet. Therefore if you have not
done so already, please refer to the following resources before you attempt this project:
● For the basic concept and techniques, start by downloading the Free Training Wheels
Primer eBook from Ravelry, and/or watching the Quick start tutorial Breakaway Crochet
Method video on YouTube.
● You may also like to watch the 2-Round Motif Tutorial for general information on working
motifs with more than 1 row.
● For a tutorial for this specific project, please watch this YouTube video.

PATTERN NOTES
The design of this rectangular shawl consists of the main section and a border. The main
section is worked first, and is completed by working 16 rows of the same square, each row
having 4 squares. These squares are worked continuously using Breakaway Crochet
techniques, which means you will have to work all the squares in a specific sequence.
Pattern sequence
The shawl is worked lengthways, meaning you will be working 4 squares at a time within a row,
before moving on to the next row of 4 squares.
2
There are 2 steps to working each row of squares, beginning with a Foundation Row (worked
from left to right), and ending with a Return Row (right to left).
Foundation Rows are where you establish the 4 squares in each new row. Remember that on
Foundation Rows, you work each square to its Breakaway point, before moving on to the next
one.
Once you get to the 4th square of the row, you finish off the 4 squares by working a Return Row
until you get to a second Breakaway point on the last square of the row. This is where you leave
this last square unfinished, then jump to the first square of the next row, and begin a new
Foundation Row of squares.
Once you have worked to the required length of the shawl (16 rows of squares), you turn the
corner and finish off all the squares on the left hand edge.
The sequence in a nutshell:
(Foundation Row, Return Row) 16 times

Special Abbreviation (WFRs)
The square motif in this shawl is worked over 3 rounds. Since the first 2 rounds are worked in
exactly the same way for every square in the project, the abbreviation “WFRs” (work first
rounds) is used as a shortcut in the instructions. So to WFRs, follow the instructions as set out
below.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATION - WFRs (work first rounds)
A. Prepare: ch12 (“connecting chs”); Place a stitch marker in the working loop on the
hook.
B. Yo 3 times, make a Floating Ring. (Yo, pull through 2 loops) twice (counts as center
ring of the square and the first dc of the round).
C. Release the remaining yo and the marked loop from the hook.
D. Continue round 1: 2dc in the Floating Ring, pc1; (4dc, pc1) 3 times, dc, slst into first
dc.
E. Round 2: RestoreTR, pc2, (ch8, skip next pc1 and 1dc, tr in next dc, pc2) 3 times
F. Finish round 2: ch4, slst over connecting chs.
Please follow along with the video tutorial for a more thorough demonstration of the techniques
involved.
