SALIENT FEATURES OF KANCHIPURAM DISTRICT
The name Kanchi is derived from Ka referring to the Hindu god Bhramma and
anchi, referring to his worship of Hindu god Vishnu at this place. Kanchipuram was
known in early Tamil literatures Kachi or Kachipedu but was later sanskritized to Kanchi
or Kanchipuram.
Kancheepuram generally experiences hot and humid climate throughout the year
with heavy to moderate rainfall during the monsoon seasons. The normal rainfall 1399.4
mm and Actual rainfall pertains to 1945.7 mm in Kanchipuram district with the highest
amount of rainfall in the month of October and November. Agriculture mainly depends on
monsoon in this district. The irrigation in Kancheepuram is mostly taken care by the
tanks and wells. During the summer season, the maximum temperature is 37.2 degree
celsius and the minimum is 21.8 degree celsius.

The District has one large scale car production units with foreign collaboration at
Sriperumbudur (HYUNDAI) and the giant glass-manufacturing unit of Saint Gobain
Glass factory near Sriperumbudur providing employment to many people, besides number
of ancillary units.
