Endocrine Disorders Nursing Notes

Definition:

Endocrine disorders involve dysfunction of hormone-producing glands.

Common Disorders:

- Diabetes mellitus (Type 1, Type 2)

- Hyperthyroidism / Hypothyroidism

- Addison’s disease

- Cushing’s syndrome

- Diabetes insipidus

- SIADH

Clinical Manifestations:

- Diabetes: polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight changes.

- Thyroid disorders: changes in metabolism, weight, mood, cardiovascular symptoms.

- Adrenal disorders: abnormal cortisol levels, electrolyte disturbances.

Nursing Management:

- Monitor hormone levels and related labs.

- Administer hormone replacement or suppressive therapy.

- Monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.

- Provide education on medication adherence and lifestyle modifications.

- Recognize signs of hypo/hyperglycemia, thyroid crisis, adrenal crisis.
