5.3.1 Tensile test specimens fram each heat, ~ogether with production castings,
shall be heated to the proper t~nperature and for the proper time for solutio
treatment.and.quenched at a rate not faster than that produced by immersion i
water which is boiling at the time of immersian. At least one set of tensile
test specimens sha11 be put into a batch type f~rnace with each load of
castings or into a conti.nuous furnace at intervals of not longer than 3 hours
5.3.2 Tensile test s pecimens f~om each heat~ together Kith production castings~
shall~ after solution heat treatment as in 5.3.1~ be heated uni.formly to
not lower than 300 F~ held at heat for not less than 1.5 hr~ and cooled in
air. At least one set of tensi:le test snecimens shall be put into a batch-
type flirnace with each load of castings or into a continuous furnace at
intervals of not longer than 3 hours.

5.5 Hardness of Cas~.ingss Fxcept at sprues and risers~ the castings shall have
r ess o Roc 1 B 27-60 or equ:i.valent.
6. QUAISPY s

6.1 Castings shall be uniform in quality and condition~ sound~ and free from foreig
materials and from internal arid external defects detrimental to fabrication or
to nerforcnance of parts. Castings shall ha.ve smooth surfaces and shall be well
cleaned.
6.2 Radiographic and other quality standards shall be as agreed upon by purchaser
and vendor.

~ 6.3 Unless otherwise s~ecified~ castings shall be produced under radiographic con-
trol. This shall consist of radiographic examination of castings until proper
foundry technique~ which will prodnce castings free from harmful internal
defects, is established for each part number, and of nroduction castings as
necessary to ensure.maintenance of satisfactor,y quality.

6.l~ Castings shall not be reuaired"by plugging~ ~,relding~ or other methods, without
~rritten ner~aission fro~a purchaser.

6.~ Castings shall not be impregnated, chemicaL~y treated, or coated to prevent

leaking~ unless specified or allowed by~written nermission Whieh states the
method to be used. Impregriated castings shall be. marked IM'P.
7. RE?oRTS:
r -

7.1 Unless otherwise snecified, the vendor of castings shall furnish Nith each
shipment three copies of a report of the results of tests for chemical compo-
sition of at least one cas~ing from each master heat represented~ and a statement
that the castings confor~ to the requirements of this specification. This
report shall include the murchase order number, master heat number (and code
sY~bol ig used)~ material specification nwnber~ part number~ and quantity from
each heat.

7.2 Unle~s otherwise snecified~ the vendor of finished or semi-finished parts shall
furnish with each shipment three copies of a report showing the purchase order

~ number~ material snecification number~ contractor or other direct supplier of

castings, part number~ and quantity. When castings for making parts are pro-
duced or purchased by the parts vendor, that'vendor shall inspect castings ~om
each master heat represented to determine confoxmance to the requirements of
this specification, and shall i~clude in the report a statement that the cast-
ings conform, or shall include copies of laboratory re ports showing the results
of tests to determine conformance.

8. IDENPIFICA TIONs. Unless otherwise specified~ each casting sha11 be plainly mark~
with he ~art nwnber, master heat rn.unber~ and lot number. Marking materiala sha:
have no deleterious effects on tY~ castings or their performanceo
9. A~PROVAL:

9.1 To assure uniformity of quality, sample castings from new or reworked master pa
terns shall be anproved by purchaser~ unless such approval be waived,

9.2 Vendor shall use the same casting technique~ including rate of cooling after
casting~ and the same heat treating procediu~e for production castings as for
approved sample castings. If necessary to make a~y change~ vendor shall ziotifyr
purchaser prior to the first shiFxnent of castings incorporating such change.

10. REJEGTIONSt Castings not conforming to this specification or to authorized

mo i ica ons wi~l be subject to re3ection.
