1, Scope
1.1 This specification? covers martensitic stainless steel
and clloy steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings, and other
pressure-containing parts (Note 1) intended primarily for
high-temperature and corrosive service (Note 2).
1.2 One grade of martensitic stainless steel and eight
‘grades of ferntic alloy steel are covered. Selection will depend
‘on design and service conditions, mechanical properties, aud
the high-temperatuze and corrosion-resisiant characteristics
(Note 3).
‘Nove 1—Casbon steel cenings for pmssure-containing, pars are
covered by Specification A 2I6/A 216M. Lew alloy queech-
ncetempered graces equivalenr to Specification A 217/A 217M grades
may be found in bors Specifications A 352/A 352M and A87/
AaaIM.
NOTE 2—The pradcs covered by this specification represent ctaceials
thay dee generally eieable for asserably With other caztings oF Yrounht
steel pars by fusion welding, itis not intended to imply that these grades
possess equal degrees of welGebiliny: therefore. iti the ‘esponsibility of
‘the purchaser to establish for himself a suitable welding technique. Since
these grades possess varying degrecs of suicitity for high-teraperttor®
and cotrosion-resistant service, it is also the respaasibility of the
purchaser to determine which greta shall be furtled, die comsider~
ation being given to the requirements of the applicable construction
odes.
‘Nove 3The conmmitte formulaing thls specification has incited
nine grades of materials tat are consdered Lo represent basis types of
Ferntie aloy seth suitable for valves, flanges fitings, and ther
pressure-containing pans, Additional allay steis that may beter fUIBIL
‘etain types of service wil be egnsidered for smelusion i this specifica
tio by the coramiriee as the need becomes apparent.
1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI
‘units ere to be regarded separately as standard, Within the
text, the ST anits are shown in brackets. The values stated in
each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system
must De used independently of the other. Combining values.
from the two systems may result in nonconformance with
the specification. Inch-pound units are applicable for mate
rial ordered to Specification A 217 and SI units for materials
ordered to Specification A 217M.
