Henry David Thoreau advocated for a peaceable revolution through civil disobedience, a
nonviolent resistance to unjust laws and governments. In his essay "On the Duty of Civil
Disobedience" (1849), Thoreau argued that individuals have a moral obligation to withhold
support from government actions they deem immoral, such as the Mexican-American
War and slavery, through acts like refusing to pay taxes. He believed that this collective,
nonviolent action could foster a truly just society and that the State should recognize the
individual as a higher power.

Key Aspects of Thoreau's Peaceable Revolution:

 Moral Opposition to Unjust Laws:

Thoreau's core argument is that individuals should not lend themselves to the wrong they
condemn by supporting an unjust government.

 Nonviolent Resistance:

He proposed nonviolent means of resistance, such as refusing to pay taxes (his own act of
protest).

 Collective Action:

While emphasizing the individual's moral conscience, Thoreau also highlighted the necessity of
collective action among individuals to achieve a peaceful revolution.

 Impact and Influence:

Thoreau's writings on civil disobedience profoundly influenced later figures and movements,
including Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for Indian independence and Martin Luther King
Jr.'s efforts for racial equality.

 Individual Conscience Over State Authority:

At its heart, Thoreau's philosophy prioritizes the individual's moral duty and conscience over
blind obedience to the State.

“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.”

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each
moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no
other land; there is no other life but this.”

“Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and
nations.”
