COURSE OUTCOMES (CO):


After completing the course, the students should be able to:
CO1: To classify different advanced machining processes and describe mechanical energy-based
advanced machining processes
CO2: To understand the underlying principles of the chemical and electrochemical energy-based
processes.
CO3: To describe thermo-electric energy-based advanced machining processes.
CO4: To know about hybrid machining technologies and their underlying principles.
CO5: To explain different micromachining and super-finishing processes.

Unit 1 Introduction to Advanced Machining Processes - Need and Classification of advanced machining
processes,- Applications, advantages and limitations of advanced machining processes, Process
Selection Considerations.
Mechanical Energy based Processes-Abrasive jet machining, Water jet machining, Ultrasonic
machining, their principles, equipment, the effect of process parameters, applications, advantages, and
limitations.
Unit 2 Chemical and Electro-Chemical Energy Based Processes- Principles, equipments, effect of process
parameters, applications, advantages and limitations of Chemical machining, Photochemical
machining, Electro-chemical machining, Electro-chemical honing, Electro chemical deburring.
Unit 3 Thermal Energy-Based Processes- Principles, equipments, effect of process parameters, applications,
advantages and limitations of Electric discharge machining, Wire electric discharge machining, Laser
beam machining, Plasma arc machining, Electron beam machining, Ion beam machining.
Unit 4 Hybrid Machining Processes (HMP)- Introduction - Need for Various hybrid advanced machining
processes (Electrochemical Grinding, Electrochemical Arc Machining, Electrochemical Discharge
Machining, Abrasive Water Jet Machining, Vibration Assisted Advanced Machining, Laser Assisted
Advanced Machining), their working principles, equipments, effect of process parameters,
applications, advantages, and limitations. Selection and comparison of different HMP machining
processes.
Unit 5 Micromachining and Advanced Finishing Processes- Overview of micromachining and its
importance, need for micromachining in modern industries, its classification of micromachining
processes, differences between macro and micromachining.
Principles, equipments, effect of process parameters, applications, advantages and limitations of
Abrasive flow machining – Chemical mechanical polishing, Magnetic abrasive finishing,
Magnetorheological finishing, Magneto rheological abrasive flow finishing, Elastic Emission
Machining, Plasma Assisted Polishing.
