Malin Kundang
At one time, there is a fishermen family in a village on the coast of West Sumatra.
The family has a son named Malin Kundang. Due to poor financial condition of the
family, the father decided to make a living in the country by wading across a vast
ocean. Malin’s father never returned to his home so that his mother had to replace
the position of Malin’s father to work.
When he was adult because of feeling sorry for her mother who worked hard, Malin
decided to go wander by a merchant ship in order to become rich after returning
home later. During his time on the ship, Malin Kundang learn a lot about
seamanship on the crew who are experienced. Malin Kundang was lucky, in his
journey he could be a rich and married with a beautiful girl.
After a long marriage, Malin and his wife set sail with the crew as well as a lot of
bodyguards and stop at his village. Malin’s mother who saw the arrival of the ship
to the dock saw two people standing on the deck of the ship. She believed that
they were Malin Kundang and his wife.
Malin’s mother was headed toward the ship. Once close enough, his mother saw
scars on his arm so she believed he was the right person, the more convinced his
mother that he was approached Malin Kundang. “Malin Kundang, my son, why did
you go so long without sending massage for me?” She said, hugged Malin
Kundang. But seeing an old woman dressed in shabby and dirty hug him, Malin
Kundang became angry even though he knew that the old woman was her mother,
because she was embarrassed when it’s known to his wife.
Received such treatment from her son, Malin Kundang’s mother was furious. She
had not expected her son to be rebellious. Not long after Malin Kundang again go
sailing and on the way came a violent storm destroys the ship Malin Kundang.
Amid the chaos, at the same time and another place Malin Kundang’s mother was
praying. Because of so anger, she shouted, “Lord, if true he was Malin my son, I
curse HIM BECOME A ROCK!”
Right after that Malin Kundang body slowly becomes rigid and in time he finally
shaped into a rock.
