Aim: To detect the presence of ketones as the functional group in the given organic compound
S.No. Experiment Observations Inference
1. Test for unsaturation:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the Pink colour of the Unsaturation is not present
organic compound in the test tube solution is not in the given organic
and add 1-2 mL of alkaline KMnO4 discharged compound
solution to it.
2. Test for alcoholic group:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the No colour change in Alcohol group is absent in
organic compound and add 1-2 mL the solution is the given organic
of ceric ammonium nitrate solution observed. compound
to it.
3. Test for phenolic group:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the No colour change in Phenol group is absent in
organic compound and add 1-2 mL the solution is the given organic
of neutral ferric chloride solution to observed. compound
it.
4. Test for carboxyl group:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the No effervescence Carboxyl group is absent
organic compound and add a spatula comes out in the given organic
of NaHCO3 to it. compound
5. Test for carbonyl group:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the Yellow-orange Carbonyl group is present
organic compound and add 1–2 mL coloured crystals are in the given organic
of rectified spirit and now add 1–2 formed compound
mL of 2,4–DNP solution to it.
Confirmatory Test for Ketone group:
a. m-Dinitrobenzene Test:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the Violet colour appears Carbonyl group present in
organic compound, add 0.1 g of m- the given organic
dinitrobenzene and shake well and compound is ketone in
then add 1–2 mL of dilute NaOH nature
aq. in the test tube. Shake the
reaction mixture well.
b. Sodium Nitroprusside Test:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the A blood red colour in Carbonyl group present in
organic compound add 1–2 mL of the test tube appears the given organic
sodium nitroprusside solution and compound is ketone in
NaOH solution drop wise to the test nature
tube.
c. Fehling’s Test:
Take a small sample (1mL) of the No brown red Carbonyl group present in
organic compound, add 1–2 mL of precipitate appears in the given organic
Fehling’s reagent and warm the test the test tube compound is not aldehyde
tube on a water bath for about 5 in nature
minutes.
Result: Given organic compound has ketones as the functional group in it.
