‍Appropriate Prepositions

1.​ abhorrence of (ঘৃণা)—A liar has no abhorrence of telling lies.


2.​ abhorrent to (ঘৃণ্য) – Dishonesty is abhorrent to me.
3.​ abide by (কোনো কিছু মেনে চলা) – They do not abide by social rules.
4.​ abide in (কোথাও থাকা) – Man abides in society.
5.​ abide with (সং গে থাকা) – My cousin abides with me.
6.​ absent from (অনুপস্থিত) – He was absent from the class.
7.​ because of (কারণে)—He cannot attend the office and other places in time
because of traffic jams.
8.​ capable of doing sth (কোনো কিছু করতে সমর্থ) – They are capable of earning
practical knowledge.
9.​ care about (কোনো ব্যক্তিকে গুরুত্ব দেয়া) – But I don’t care about money.
10.​care for (কোনো কিছু / ব্যক্তির যত্ন নেয়া) – The dog had been cared for that morning.
11.​ careful of/with/about (যত্নবান) – They are not careful of their health.
12.​deal in (কোনো কিছু র ব্যবসা করা) – He deals in books.
13.​deal with (কোনো কিছু আলোচনা করা/সমাধান করা) – You should deal with your
problem.
14.​depend/dependent on (But independent) (কোনো কিছু / ব্যক্তির উপর নির্ভ র করা) –
The future of a country depends on the students.
15.​familiar to (কারো সাথে পরিচিত) – Mr. Ranjit is familiar to Mr. Prakash, but he is
not.
16.​fond of (কোনো কিছু র অনুরাগী) – A good student is fond of books.
17.​get rid of (কোনো কিছু থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়া) – They help us to get rid of the din and
bustle of life. [RB ’13; ’09]
18.​give up (কোনো কিছু ত্যাগ করা) – It is high time, we gave up the habit of
covetousness. [CB ’09]
19.​good at (কোনো কিছু তে দক্ষ) – Hasan is good at English.
20.​go against (কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর বিরুদ্ধে যাওয়া) – He cannot go against rules.
21.​Go on (চালিয়ে যাওয়া)—We should go on our study.
22.​go through (পড়া—You should go through English newspapers, books, etc.
23.​hanker after/for (কোনো কিছু র জন্য লালায়িত হওয়া) – Some people hanker after

24.​hinder from (কোনো কিছু করতে কাউকে বিঘ্নিত করা) – It hindered him from going
abroad.
For SSC (Secondary School Certificate) exams, common prepositions used include in,
on, at, of, for, to, from, with, by, about, after, before, under, over, through, across,
between, among, behind, and beside. These prepositions are used to show
relationships between words in a sentence, such as location, time, direction, and
more.
Examples of how these prepositions are used:

In: "The book is in the bag." (location)


On: "The cat is sitting on the chair." (location on a surface)
At: "Meet me at the park." (specific location)
Of: "The color of the car is blue." (possession)
For: "This gift is for you." (purpose or recipient)
To: "I am going to the store." (direction)
From: "I received a letter from my friend." (origin)
With: "She is talking with her friend." (accompaniment)
By: "The book was written by a famous author." (agent)
About: "Tell me about your trip." (topic)
After: "We will eat dinner after the movie." (time)
Before: "Please arrive before 8 pm." (time)
Under: "The dog is hiding under the table." (location below)
Over: "The plane flew over the mountains." (location above)
Through: "The train went through the tunnel." (passage)
Across: "They walked across the street." (direction)
Between: "The house is between the two trees." (location)
Among: "She was popular among her friends." (surrounded by)
Behind: "The car is parked behind the building." (location)
Beside: "He sat beside her." (location next to)
